Talk to people who are bipolar.  Often their depression has no reason.  It is not situational.  They just feel like a black hole and they don't know why.  

Huge difference between mania and special interests.  But I could see how some diagnostic questions could be confusing for aspies such as not sleeping much in some phases.  Sleep problems are not due to mania nor is staying up late to work on special projects.
