RE: whats your specialist subject/interest??

My major interests are anthropology/mythology/symbols/psychology, seperately and in relation to each other. I've also recently revisited an old interest in word etymology, and have renewed my study of French. Philosophy, physics, chemistry, medicine and history are also areas of interest- but no great expertise.

I also paint, draw, write, and compose crappy music obsessively. I like to take things in my house apart, then try to rebuild them. Things in my home are often broken for this very reason. I have defibrillated myself by messing with my television, and started a foul smelling fire by trying to "improve" my vacuum cleaner.

RE: whats your specialist subject/interest??

From an early age I've been interested in reading about crime, criminals & mysteries of many kinds. I'd say it's been going for 35 years now although my interest has widened beyond just the criminal mind because as I've come to learn -there are only minds and one has to look beyond what the person does to see where the perversion stems from. It isn't the thought that kills - it's the act of violence that kills. To identify what it is that is unsound of the mind one must also identify what is sound.

Nobody realizes that some people expend tremendous energy merely to be normal.

RE: whats your specialist subject/interest??

This is weird but I love to do my income tax.  It is quite complicated and I just can't wait to do it each year. I also like maps and plans. I like to build big things, houses, campers, restore cars. I also like to travel, and have been to all the 50 states, all the provences of Canada, most of the states of Mexico (going there tomorrow), and 30-some foreign countries. And I like to write, and wrote several books.

Long term: Anything to do with myth and folklore (especially Greek)

Also I have a lot of short term interests which came and went as actual obsessions, but still are interests.

RE: whats your specialist subject/interest??

My interests keep specialising.

Started out with science. Then to 'how the human body works (physiology, but I didn't know it was called that back then), then to the nervous system, then that obviously lead to neuroscience. And there you go, my obsession is neurons. Been that for about 7 years (since I was 13ish, I'm 21 now).My favourite part of the brain is the amygdala.

I've also had countless short term obsessions that later became interests, like what nyanchan said. The interests above are like marriages. But these ones are like passionate affairs. These obessions are usually a word of a topic. I really like to learn about the topic during the obession. Read about it, search in on google, search it on YouTube, look at Livejournal comunities for it, etc. Currently, it's 'vivisevtion'.

Hi Fred-are you a published author then?
I am a musician-my main instrument is piano. Music is pretty well how I define myself...
I am  also more than slightly obsessed with anything medical/mental health/special needs..

French cinema - especially the French New Wave, anything by Jean-Luc Godard, and Michael Haneke (who is Austrian, but his primary works are in French). Haneke's "Code Inconnu" is a constant companion/obsession of mine.

Can't speak a lick of French though.

Anything that has to do with history.

The first one was self-published, later ones were by a publishing company.  It was just a hobby.  Is you music a hobby or a profession?

I've had a lot of short-term interests.  My long-term ones tend to be books, animals, & weather, not necessarily in that order.

hmm-both I think. I do teach private piano lessons at a music centre, which gives me a bit of an income. In the past I taught music (and other subjects) in a public elementary school.
I like to learn new pieces, make up songs, literally hours can go by...
People I work with say I can play anything on the piano-which isn't entirely true but I enjoy the reputation Smile

Fred, I marvel that you enjoy doing taxes Smile  bit stressful for me

LOL .jaime.! I could almost repeat your post word-for-word about me! Although my numerous vacuum-cleaner rebuilds seem, mostly, to have been rather more successful than yours I have caused that horrid smell!

And, of course, I would have to add motorcycling (particularly Gold Wings) and Pokémon!
