I figure the whole greeting thing is like learning phrases in a foreign language. In lots of classes, we would practice sample dialogs to get comfortable with them. In every language class, one of the first things you learn is the customary greeting when running into someone you know. When I was studying Spanish we practiced: "Como esta?" "Bueno. Y usted?" In German it was "We gehts?" "Gehts gud? Und dir?"

I don't see why learning the "sample dialog" for English is any different. "How are ya?" "Good. And you?" Since, as Aspies, we theoretically think in pictures and words aren't actually our native language, we can just regard it as learning a few phrases for use while visiting a foreign land (NTland).
