I just found out that members of the aspie-israeli community plan to have a local APD event.
(i'm trying to convince them to call it "autistic celebration day", because in Israel the term "pride" has become synonym with the term "homosexuality").

That's great. I honestly think that they should use pride though, it's a general word, and if people use it, the original meaning will stay the same.

I like the idea of Autistic Celebration Day.

Pride will make us all happy and gay. In the old sense of the words.

I'm no expert in the English language, but I like to think about the different connotations of words, like word association and things.

Yes, pride might have homosexual connotations.  But as Amy pointed out, to use 'pride' in relation to autism is simply to use it in its original meaning.  No word should be 'claimed' by any group.

Also the connotations between the two words suggested, pride and celebration are very different to me.

Celebration is more like a one-off special event.  Celebration is not a general and continuing state of affairs.

Whereas pride is.  Pride has more of a connotation of being a general state of affairs and being continuing.

So it really depends on the emphasis required.  Celebration does turn it more into a one-off, which in a way, autism pride day is, so it achieves the goal in that respect.  But in terms of using autism pride day to create an ongoing and longer-lasting awareness and general and continuing feeling about autism, then - personally speaking - I feel pride is more appropriate.

Black Pride is a very common phrase. I think the meaning is clear.

I generally associate pride with hubris.
That's primarily because I suffer from Dante's cardinal sin so much myself.

Due to technical issues, the APD event in Israel will be on Friday the 16th, rather than on Sunday the 18th.

When: Friday the 16th, 10am.
Where: The eucalyptus grove, near Hadera West train station.
What: An informal chat about autistic activism, or whatever.
