I do not watch Dr. Phil but I went ahead and recorded it when I saw the post on here about it.
I have to agree that the Mom AND Dad are not taking the right approach at all. The Mom said that she thought her son used his dx as an excuse. She put all the blame on him instead of trying to understand where the poor kid was comming from. He seemed very misunderstood.
All and all... not a good show (not I'd expect it to be  ).

Have been looking at the Dr. Shill err Phil website and its making me angry, which doesnt happen often.
I was about to go to bed, but my mother-in-law called and said, excitedly, that the show was about Asperger's today (She's really excited now that she finally knows "what's wrong" with me. But I don't want to shed her in a bad light. She loves me and she's trying to understand and I appreciate that). I don't like the Dr, she loves him.
So, I checked out his site, and now I can't sleep I'm so sad.
They just focused on the meltdowns. As I've gotten older, I've learned to cope, and don't feel as much rage as I did as a teen (hormones going crazy for everybody then). NT's get angry too. They didn't spread any awareness about it and how to love us, they just incited fear. The site, anyway. I didn't see the show yet.

Given that he does not even have a doctrate in psychology, I find it aggravating that we cannot get up on national TV and denounce him to the rest of the world.

Does he have a doctorate? In what? I don't know much about him. I've always found him so interested in himself and getting ratings, that I can't stand it.
Plus, and I know it's stupid, I hate how he calls himself dr. Phil, and not Dr. McGraw. It's like, "I'm here to be your friend, call me Phil. But don't forget that I'm a doctor."

People treat him like his advice is the be all definite expert advice possible, it's sickening. I watched the show... yes WP did get some more views from the fact that it was used to display an extreme example of behavior which I believe likely will do more harm than fully good for people's image of Aspies. Of course Alex does take advantage of it for sure, that he got talked about as a responsible web site owner and such. Bad enough today Susanne Wright (Bob Wright of Autism Speaks's wife) was on The View and further put out there the negativities of autism and I didn't really hear once her say anything positive about her grandson as an individual.
A mother of an AS son that posted on the discussion topic from Dr. Phil's show yesterday wrote this poem:
MY CHILD LIKE THIS
By Carrie Fleming
Dear God, Why did you give me a child like this?
Why not a child who could give perfect bliss?
He’s so sad, scared ,and confused.
If you think it’s funny, I’m not amused.
I love him but I don’t understand you see,
Why you would give this child to me.
He feels too much and sometimes too little
Why can’t he just find a place in the middle?
He hurts so bad, I want to ease his pain,
But sometimes my efforts are in vain.
No one else seems to understand
The hurt that fills my little man.
His big blue eyes filled up with tears
Will stay in my mind for the rest of my years.
"Why are they mean to him?" he overheard me once say.
"Don’t worry mommy, I scared them away."
He needs me so, and now I see.
That is why you gave this child to me.
He kisses me each morning and then each night
Oh my dear Jesus, he’s a beautiful sight.
I reflect on this child as the lights go dim,
Then I realize how much I need him.
Our life is surely far from bliss,
But thank you dear God for my child like this.

Another wonderfully (ignorant) poster chimed in on that thread:
Adults with Asperger's
I am a 59 year old lady married to a 56 year old man who found out only 3 years ago that he has Asperger's. The failure of the psychological community (in SC), to recognize this condition, has caused us untold grief, especially me. We've been married for 17 years. The communication problems have naturally sent us to many marriage counselors, once on the advice of psychiatrist. This gentleman barely gave me 10 minutes to explain the problems, and saw me as a complaining wife, and thus sent us packing, inappropriately, to marriage counseling. I find myself angry beyond belief that my husband's parents have been so clueless as to never seek help for him (even if they found none), and even today they are in denial about his condition.
I learned a great deal by reading a book by Maxine C. Aston, entitled, THE OTHER HALF OF ASPERGER'S. It reads like my autobiography. Sadly, I would have to say from experience that a person with Asperger's, in my opinion, is in no way marriage material. How sad that this malady has been recongnized and addressed in England and Australia for decades more than it was ever brought to the forefront in America. There must be thousands of undiagnosed "Aspies" trying to function in marriages that don't work, and in careers where their social traits are a hindrance to their advancement, regardless of their academic skills, which are usually high.

Well there are lots of us who are married, so we are good material for someone! I dont know why she thinks that AS has been around for decades more in europe.

GGGRRRRRRRRRR! "Dr". Phil is a quack, pure and simple, his show is Jerry Springer, with a pompous, arrogant, self absorbed pseudo intellectual seriousness. He is pop culture flavor of the month, he's the "O'Reilly factor" of pop psychology. I bet that "mother" also is one of the poster's at that anti-aspie forum on Delphi. My sympathies to that poor kid for having such a monster mom.
Seriously, anybody who lives their life according to what that quack advises deserves what they get. And my deepest sympathies to the victims of such ignorant people!
Peace

I have a feeling that if a large group of US got on national TV to say ANYTHING, it'd be talked about on Saturday Night Live more than anywhere else...

Brainmatters Inc -- sounds like they bought an expensive diagnostic machine and are looking for ways to make money with it.
- I only saw just the last few minutes of the teen with AS. I was not impressed but then Dr. Phil has the "ten minute" solutions for every problem. The other half of the show was showing a brain image of man with Tourettes. He complained about his involuntary use of the F-word and "***". He felt very ashamed of that more than anything else.
The scan photos were supposed to increased blood flow to different parts of the brain when compared to "normal brains". I think blood flow in anyone's brain might be due to what activities a person usually does or even some purely physical difference (clot or something). I would suspect that my digestive system would show increased blood flow after a meal. Maybe someone with AS might have a greater blood flow in certain areas of their brain because they actually use their brain more than others. How can that be bad?

I can't believe I supported going on the dr phil show. pah! I will never watch that show again. My Mom watched it. But it made me so mad that I left the room.
Read this.
Dr. Phil acknowledges that there are other traits of Asperger's besides rage
My Response is:
If that is so, then why is there half a show talking about just that? Hardly the most balanced protrayal of people with Asperger's Syndrome, and the most negitive view of Asperger's Possible.
I think that an AFF letter writing campain is in order.

Okay... I wish to write this formally and send it to both the Dr. Phag site and CC it to some address where AFF can publish it. Basically, I know not how the show went because the series is not easy to see on television here. But a formal complaint while pointing out the facts (such as the endless barrage of abuse) would be a big step.
