Information please

Hi
My name is Damin. I am new to this site so hope it is ok to ask a question. I was diagnosed with aspergers when I was sixteen after being stuck in special classes at school , bullied and all the normal stuff when you are so called not normal.
I still find social contact quite hard, I am 29 now, live in Wellington and work as a caregiver, I love this job as the older people are more accepting and they just accept you, plus I love helping them. I have spent my whole life trying to act like there was nothing wrong, but I know that people notice, sometimes I am quite and don't join in, and yesterday I worked mate asked me if I has aspergers and for the first time I said yes. I just got sick of pretending, this year I am just going to be me, and is old really like to know if there are any support groups in Wellington city, new Zealand. I live right in the city and would really like to meet other people. I am what the dr classes as high functioning not sure what that's about as I am no total bright spark!!
Anyway would love to hear from people in the Wellington area , I don't drive at present but this is another thing I plan to do this year.
Thanks for any info
Take care
Damin

Hi mate, I'm Aussie, so can't help you much with the NZ stuff, but it's nice to meet you! The "high functioning" thing just means that you are able to manage  in society independently, you work and look after yourself.  It's interesting how many of us AS people tend to gravitate to the caring roles: I was a preschool teacher until my retirement due to knee injury.
All the best!

To be ruled by tradition just means that you're letting yourself be outvoted by the dead.

That's almost the exact opposite of the media portrayal of us. Talk about a lack of journalistic integrity...

Hi Alison
Nice to meet you, well in that case I guess I am high functioning. Yeah it is abit strange I find it quite hard to be social it often feels like work, but I am quite ok in the caregiving role, I actually thinking of studying mental health this year, so I hope I can do it. I am thinking of moving to Aussie next year. I am hoping by belonging to a support group that I can meet people and bounce ideas of each other, but this website is pretty cool and I have found a page on Facebook as well.
Anyway nice to meet you
Take care
Damin

Hello and welcome.

It looks like you have an Asperger group for adults in your town.  I don't know about getting there as I'm in the U.S.  Do you have bus services?
