What are the chances....

... of having both Asperger's and a FAE diagnosis? I mean, I've tried every search combination I could and come up empty. And yet, I exist. A guy who has both Partial FAS (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome) and Asperger's Syndrome.

The reason I'm wondering is because my nephew's girlfriend is pregnant, and she's a drinker from what I can tell. I'd guess that I had a one-in-a-million chance or something of having both, and I apparently had a genetic predisposition to autism if my bio-family is anything to go by (can I say fixated all-around?)

Anyways, would seriously like some input here. Also, anyone know if drinking when you have any sign of the FAS spectrum is going to make the condition worse or something? My nephew keeps pushing me to drink; I took a couple sips of a Bud Light he brought with him. I don't know if it was the FAS or just my ingrained aversion to alcohol thanks to my adopt-father, but it tasted like *** and me want to hurl....

...I don't see why not. AS is genetic, FAS is environmental.

Bud, by the way, is disgusting and unworthy of the name beer. Light even more so.

RE: What are the chances....

I think it's entirely possible for both to co-exist, but most likely the dx of somebody with both would be weighted to the more severe of the two, with the other, unless it was very noticeable, being missed.  I had to find out I had Hashimoto's Thyroiditis before I got my dx of Aspergers, and then it was another couple of years before I was also found to have a mild form of Lupus.  It seems once the medical profession finds one dx, they don't bother looking for anything else, and just blame everything on the first one.

Back in the 1970's, when I first began to experience the symptoms of Hashimoto's, I went to a number of different doctors, all to be given the same recommendation: "It's hormonal.  It'll clear up once you have a baby." When I responded that I wasn't at all sure I wanted a baby, they usually patronised me about "ALL women want babies."

And to think, left untreated, Hashimoto's leads to high levels of infertility.  Looks like I dodged a bullet when I got pregnant with my daughter.

Its possible if the fetus has autism and then the mother drinks while the fetus is developing, they could be born with both.

I don't like alcohol either. Some people just don't like the taste.

So if you were to suggest one, what would it be?

Are you asking for beer suggestions? Start by moving to the UK, or another country that didn't lose its entire brewing tradition through prohibition.
St peter's is a goob British brewery whose ales are exported worldwide. Be aware, though, that proper beer i.e. other than fizzy yellow American water, has a powerful taste, so you can't just expect to like it the first time you try it. I grew up drinking beer (in small measures when I was a kid, obviously) so for me it's never been a problem.

You're in America, so you're kinda screwed for widely available good beer.

If you can get hold of 'em - London Pride, Hobgoblin. They're quite thick tasting with interesting layers of flavour. Old Speckled Hen is crisper, slightly bitter and very refreshing. My favourite is Innus and Gunn - it's an Indian Pale Ale, so quite light in colour and flavour, but it's matured in old whiskey barrels, so it's got this lovely aftertaste like an extremely mild and flavoursome whiskey. It also makes the best shandy in the goddamned world.

The Wychwood brewery makes pretty good beer all around, especially their Christmas beer, Humbug.

Moving away from hop based beers, Crabbies alcoholic ginger beer is delicious, but a little dangerous - it doesn't taste or feel alcoholic, so it's easy to drink more than you think you have.

Cripplecock Cider Beer is amazing.
But, unfortunately for the menfolk, it lives up to it's name.

When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple with a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves and satin candles, and say we've no money for butter.I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells and run my stick along the public railings and make up for the sobriety of my youth.I shall go out in my slippers in the rain and pick the flowers in other people's gardens. And learn to spit...

I can't get the taste of alcohol either.  Which makes me a bit of an oddity, living in Australia! Even more so because I grew up in the Riverina, which is practically horizon-to-horizon vineyards and more wineries than you could shake a stick at.  i've been accused of being un-Australian, simply because I find alcohol tastes yucky.

I dont think so, just a marketing thing I guess. Getting the beer drinkers to try it unwittingly!
