Music in gaming.

As I may have said before, somewhere anyway music from games can be quite emotional or inspiring.

Again I will refer back to Mass Effect. Mass Effect 2 contains at least one of my favorite music pieces in a game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAcWuw2pDpo - This is not the original version but it is a better version. Shame they didn't put this version in the actual game.

The music in a game can really set/ add to the mood/scenario, after all this is why music is added to things in most cases.

Now I will refer to Guile's theme from Street Fighter 2, which goes with just about everything.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtlYCE4dnfk - An example it's from Sherlock Holmes: A game of Shadows. It is probably one of my favorite examples of where the music suits.

Anyway, while this one piece of music "goes with everything" there is always the music that doesn't, unless mixed with something else.

The Lavender town theme. I don't think I need to post a link, we all know it and we all used to hate it ((gives me headaches, like the creepypastas said it would, weird))

Of course, much older themes such as the Mario theme, which I'm sure we all know are more famous but for the right reasons, of course. I bloody love that theme, I love it as much as I love pancakes. And dear god how I love pancakes.

My favorite romantic pieces of music from games are probably from the DarknessII

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoINlQZ5pZI

And yes, you guessed it. Mass Effect ((3))

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txrPOJG5bUc

Both were in completely different scenarios

I can't really decide on a favorite "sad piece" though there are a handful that I love, again some are from the Mass Effect series[/color]

RE: Music in gaming.

(Warning; Spoilers)

Wot, no Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty theme tune?

Not even ZOE2's Beyond The Bounds? No love for Nerevar Rising, which actually has a spoiler for the end of the game if you listen to it carefully (The drums are the heart of Lorkhan, listen to the beat)? No reference to the excellent use of Adagio for Strings and Agnus Dei in Homeworld, all three times? Also, dat voice acting from Fleet Command in the second video.

I never played this game but when I was trying to please my man during a long-distance phase in our relationship, I made this recording to remind him of his childhood...

RE: Music in gaming.

In my opinion, the best video game music can stand out on its own, outside of the context of the game in which it originally appeared. That's why I favor the timeless fantasy scores of Nobuo Uematsu, Kenji Ito, Yasunori Mitsuda, and Jeremy Soule, the orchestral bombast of Koichi Sugiyama, Hitoshi Sakimoto, and Masaharu Iwata, the progressive rock-influenced scores of Motoi Sakuraba and Satoshi Kadokura, the neo-Romanticism of Masashi Hamauzu, the ambient soundscapes of Junya Nakano, David Wise, and Eveline Fischer, the versatility of Yoko Shimomura and Shogo Sakai, the pulsating dance club beats of Neil Voss and Hideki Naganuma, and the spaghetti western-inspired scores of Michiko Naruke and Masato Koda.

Yeah, it was Uematsu, perhaps more than anyone else, who made players really pay close attention to music in video games (and in doing so, he inspired future generations of game-based composers and musicians).

Ohhhh Gareth...

I can safely assume you will love this

OK that is an opening to talk about this guy on youtube. I first came across his work when looking up Mass Effect stuff ((no surprises there Rolleyes ))

He hasn't got that many videos, but you should really check him out:

Everything bar one ((so far)) is gaming related. The other has to do with the world cup or something.
