Why isn't the SD card reader on my desktop actually reading SD cards ?

I'm trying to get Debian to recognize the SD card reader on the front of my Desktop to read SD cards ... This is the only was I could import pictures of my self and other things unto this computer.

So any of you Linux guru's or Gods know what I could do to get the SD media card reader mounted on my system so I could import some images from this old and stupid Windows smart phone ?

RE: Why isn't the SD card reader on my desktop actually reading SD cards ?

This is the smart phone that has my images of me:

I'd love to hack this phone and install Linux on it, but the person (an old friend) who gave it to me lost the USB connectors to it a long time ago and the only way left to get the images from the smart phone is through the SDHC card that came with it...

This desktop has a SD card reader but I can't seem to mount it...  Am I trying to get it to read the wrong type of card ? :/

No service for the phone :/ This friend kind of gave the phone to play with since he bought himself a new one...

RE: Why isn't the SD card reader on my desktop actually reading SD cards ?

If the system isn't seeing the card reader, then it's probably not mounted.

...I'm going to have to qualify that statement - most front panel card readers are actually just USB host devices that present themselves as either a hub, then pass through cards as USB devices, or as USB devices with removable storage (remember how many USB devices you can chain off one header...?).

If it's not seeing the cards, check that the reader is actually showing up. If it is showing up, make sure that you're actually mounting the cards.

Do this:
type "lsusb" on the terminal
Paste the results here

Then do this:
type "dmesg" on the terminal
Paste the results
Insert the card
type "dmesg" on the terminal
Paste the results here

Please paste without the quote tags, and only paste the last 10-20 lines of dmesg
