Intelligence and HFA/Aspergers

Is it merely a stereotype that Aspergers and HFA are often associated with high intelligence?

To me it seems like more than just coincidence that a lot of aspies seem super smart.

It's a wrong assumption based on the wording of the DSM: AS is just excluded if your IQ score is <70, i.e. 2 % of the population cannot be dx'ed with AS (they'd get the LFA label).

High intelligence, on the other hand, means being part of the 2 % who score highest (usually >130).

That means, that 96 % are +/- average, and most Aspies (statistically) should be there, too. Only the other few (both types) tend to stand out, and get media coverage.
