My "ghost" theory
This is something of a theory of what it might be like to be a disembodied spirit, or a freed conscience mind ....
When you die and pass away from this world, you go through a sleeping period or a state of a mind similar to that when your in deep meditation.
Now, when a spirit manifests itself, or makes itself visible to the living, what it's doing is gathering energy around it because the conscience mind never seizes to exist.1 So what that means is that when your a spirit and every-time move or feel a powerful emotion, you feed off of the surrounding energy that's present at the time.
1 This probably explains the reason why when the living is near these disembodied beings, they feel the temperature drop or why electronic devices seems to shutdown ?
Another idea I had is that it would take a while for a human's natural act of breathing to stop when they die due to instinct. This is a momentum that's continuing to build as you breath and therefore it'd take longer for your natural instincts to die along with the body.
This can include the bizarre sensation of still feeling some sort of faint heartbeat as well.
The Christian church claims that you immediately go to heaven or to hell when you die, but if I remember correctily, Jesus did say that he will resurrect the dead. So whats the point of sending someone to heaven or to hell if God's only going to recall everyone who ever lived back to life ?
So that's some of my theory of what it'd be like to be a spirit, aparation, or ghost and I think the only way to prove this is to dive into Metaphysics, which I hope doesn't involve mathematics ... :/

I find this a little difficult to understand: to me, once you're dead, your brain stops working, consciousness is gone and nothing works anymore. So you're dead. What's the point of imagining some other form of consciousness after that?
I'm not trying to be mean here, btw, I just really can't see why people imagine some other form of existence once this one is over.

To be ruled by tradition just means that you're letting yourself be outvoted by the dead.

I have this weird idea that the conscience mind is actually made up of energy and no force in the Universe can destroy energy.... Now what if the human mind is made up of something beyond energy which is something that still remains undiscovered ?

RE: My "ghost" theory
A murdered woman that refuse to go on because a woman killed her is still free and the one everyone else thinks did it is on death row talks to me occssionally. It used to be more often but she has since stepped back a bit. I can feel her presence around me still though and she isn't really have a mean temperment and is peaceful when it comes to getting my attention. I don't really believe that there are ghosts per se but rather what people consider as ghosts as being spirits that have not moved on because something needs to be either settled or closure. I wouldn't say where they go is what Christians consider as Heaven or Hell but rather a different aspect of the two. The so called Heaven I believe is quite peaceful and Hell is exactly the same except "Heaven" has some nicer things and ammenities that "Hell" doesn't. Sort of like how a restaurant may have a special room and dishes for parties and other gatherings separated from the main dining area. And I like that idea since my parents came from Taiwan where Christianity isn't very common and were raised as Buddists but do not practice it actively. I just never thought God would really want those who have died to suffer in the afterlife because I believe God love each and every person that lives and has ever lived and that everyone has good in them no matter what horrible things they did while on Earth.

True...but the brain is a tool for disembodied thought energy. Once it dies, you cannot experience life as through that body, but your spiritual energy is still buzzing about.
You can trace a lot of experience back to the brain, but neuroscience is a zygote right now...there are some motivation and tendency difficulties they can't work out...

Actually I agrre with you and wasn't trying to discredit what you said. When I say that the spirit eventually moves on, I didn't mean it disappears forever. I simply meant it goes to a place of rest where it is at peace and will not have any impact of the living world anymore as the particular spirit's unfinished business is complete.

I'm looking at the same thread as you are, and seeing one person politely disagreeing with you and two others largely agreeing with you. I don't believe in ghosts but I do find the subject and related theories fascinating. This can be a fun and informative thread if you want it to be.

Well spotted. I never really picked up on that discrepancy before.
It does tie in to my theory that Christianity was a very successful doomsday cult for some of its early history, and that when the imminent end-of-the-world scenario didn't happen as expected, it successfully transitioned into an institution with certain changes to its belief systems as necessary for such a transition.

Not everyone is going to agree about ghosts. As long as people are being civil to each other, that's the important thing.
Um, you seem to have your PMs turned off. I was hoping I might be able to respond to the last one you sent me, if that's okay.

RE: My "ghost" theory
All theories of afterlife and ongoing spiritual energy divorced and discrete from the body are wishful thinking generated by the fact that we like to think we're too important for the world to carry on without us. Find me some scientific evidence to support your theories and I'll reconsider.
ps, if the PM function is turned off, try sending a messge via this disembodied spiritual energy that exists without the restraints of the physical world. Not working? There's a surprise.

I didn't mean any offence. I just disagreed with you. It would be condescending and a lie if I agreed with you when I don't. Of course, you're welcome to state your ideas and opinions, as I am. Please don't take it so personally, it wasn't meant that way.
