Federal education officials are handling a record number of disability-related civil rights complaints in the nation’s schools.

In a report out this week, the U.S. Department of Education says that more than 11,700 complaints alleging violations of disability rights were filed with its Office of Civil Rights between 2009 and 2011. That’s the highest number ever received in a three-year period, the agency said.

The vast majority of concerns — more than 4,600 — hinged on the rights of students with disabilities to a free and appropriate public education, or FAPE.

Other commonly cited problems related to retaliation, exclusion/denial of benefits, academic adjustments and disability harassment, the report indicates.

Disability-related complaints accounted for over 55 percent of those received by the Education Department during the three-year period. The nearly 600 staffers in the agency’s Office of Civil Rights also investigate concerns based on race, color, national origin, sex and age.

...thats not good if complaints are rising, but its good if more things are being reported (rather than being swept under the rug)

What is being done?  well there is supposed to be legislation that accessibility and acceptance is being put into workplaces and schools.  The goal is to be finished by 2025 though.  Sorry I can't wait that long.

That is the politicians latest trick is long term planning.  Decades from now they will not even be in office.  The next government elected in changes the budget and the plans.  Maybe they are waiting for better genetic testing and big pharma plans, building more prisons or population extermination plans.

Then some of the complaints are ridiculous like parents suing the school board because there is not elevator installed in their older school building.  They put the child's classroom on the ground floor which is a reasonable accommodation but they will complain about some other room that is not so accessible.

I would like to see a category of complaints and what actions are being done about them.

Perhaps there should be a law limiting the extent to which the effects of a bill can be delayed after it is accepted.  I'm also curious about laws which have expiration dates, but I don't think we should be in business of requiring laws to stay in effect.

RE: School Disability Complaints Hit Record High

I'm not surprised. People have always been picking on the mentally, emotionally, and physically disabled, however it's sad to hear harassment, judgment, teasing, and the sorts are rising. Look on the bright side, at least it's getting reported.

Either way, most people don't realize that picking on the disabled will only make things worse for them. Especially if it is a person with, say, Avoidant Personality Disorder, or Social Anxiety Disorder.

All in all, I've lost all faith in humanity long ago. Nothing will restore my faith. Ever.
