Running a computer outside of my network ?

I've asked this question on a forum for pen-testers and white-hat hackers about setting up a secondary computer to test the security of my main desktop and as a learning tool and I got a response about being better if I "Did this outside of my network".

So how would I do this ? I don't think I could set my second computer outside of the network if has to use the same router as all the other computers unless I was to set an invisible server or network of some sort ... I think :/

For the past few days I've been learning a little more about Unix commands and reading up on networking but I'm going to continue being busy for a while and won't be on here as much as I have been since May of this year. Not to mention other things I've been working on as well.

Any help would appreciated and thank you so far for all the help (and lessons)  in the past. I appreciate it a lot....

Outside your network means precisely what it sounds like - not on the same network, that would usually mean out on the internet somewhere or on the other side of your router if that's possible - most home users only have a single router though combining DSL/cable gateway with NAT and so on all in one box.

Try linode.com or amazon EC2 (the latter will give you a free micro instance for 1 year) if you want a cheap server to mess around with.

I'll have to talk to my Dad about that .... :/ On the plus side, I now know that Google internet cookies are an invasion of privacy and I wish I could block those damn ad sense Google cookies from being stored on my computer...

So Google Cookies = Invasion of Privacy right ?

Google cookies arn't anything particularly special. When you do a search query on google your search query is stored at google, they use cookies to identify you so they can build up a profile about you to serve advertisements.

Not great, but most advertisers do this unfortunately, and there's not really any escaping it since google is more or less everywhere.

So, technically their storing cookies on my machine to build up a profile of me so they advertise crap to me ? Just a question, but where are these cookies stored on a Linux machine ?

Uh yeah there is, you can block them.  I believe google analytics is the site they host their cookies on, and I have it blocked using noscript on firefox.

Yes but it's a null point as they log all the queries along with your IP address anyway. xD
