With pork costs rising, Great Britain is facing a bacon and sausage shortage as pig farmers cut back on herd size. But the problem may soon become global.
In a recent press release, the U.K.'s National Pig Association is warning that a "world shortage of pork and bacon next year is now unavoidable":
New data shows the European Union pig herd is declining at a significant rate, and this is a trend that is being mirrored around the world. Pig farmers have been plunged into loss by high pig-feed costs, caused by the global failure of maize and soya harvests. All main European pig-producing countries report shrinking sow herds.
Financial Times reports that this past season's droughts in North America and Russia are to blame for the spike in prices for grain crops, which are used to feed animals.
As of August, nearly half of all counties in the U.S. were considered disaster areas due to extreme dryness and heat.
Some U.S. farmers have taken to extreme measures to feed their livestock and save money at the same time, including one Kentucky farmer who fed his cattle candy "just to survive."

This doesn't make sense. A luxury food item has to be more expensive than pig feed, even when feed is scarce. You'd be better off giving them sugar water to survive. It would be cheaper than candy.
People used to feed pigs leftovers. I'm sure a resourceful pig farmer could come up with an agreement with a few restaurants to haul away uneaten food. I'm not sure how restaurant regulations would come into play, but honestly you could just leave a few trash bags out by the dumpster every evening and let the farmer know which ones to throw in his truck. It would certainly be cheaper than candy, plus you're utilizing something that would have otherwise gone to waste.

^ This is true to an extent. However, it is a fact that supermarket dictation of price has led to animal production becoming less and less viable, as the price is based on what the supermarket is prepared to pay, not on the production costs. We have the same problem with milk production in the UK.
I am the cat who walks by himself, and all places are alike to me.

that wont work on the industrial scale needed to feed billions of humans
cookies and marshmellows contain corn syrup
so it is good feed bought cheaply from cookie factories as waste

I recently saw a documentary about North American wild hogs rapidly reproducing and taking over the countryside. Why can't people hunt them down and use THEIR carcasses as a food source?

yeah, I get your sexual innuendo thing
Not only that but it is a derogotory term used to describe caucasians with no Native American in them and claim to be shamans.
