Pie returneth

And they delivered it on time this time round!

Problem is it's not the poacher's pie, just plain old pork pie - I LOVE the poacher's pie.

RE: Pie returneth

I tried pork pies a couple of times in Blighty. A lump of tasteless, congealed pork fat, wrapped in a thick, hard, tasteless crust of pastry. Are they all like that, or was I just unlucky?

I really like pie too, but sweet pie. Apple pie, cherry pie, any kind of berry pie, pumpkin pie, any kind of squash pie...

I don't like pecan pie though.

And, as a vegetarian, I had never even seen a pork pie (until now).

Some are just nasty, some are insanely good.

If you can get "poacher's pie" from fortnum and mason, just do it without thinking, you can thank me later.

I've no immediate plans to return to Blighty, but if and when I do I will be sure to try a poacher's pie.

Apart from some good Indian food, clotted cream ice cream in Cornwall, and the occasional excellent battered haddock and chips (with curry gravy to dip the chips in), I didn't find a lot of great food in England. Black pudding and haggis are not bad though.

You should try a PROPER Cornish pasty.................mmmmmmmmmmmm

I tried several Cornish pasties - in Cornwall - and none of them were even passable. I know they can be good, when I were a lad we ate them homemade regularly and they were excellent (Cornish ancestors waaaaaaay back).

RE: Pie returneth

I remember one episode of Dexter's Laboratory where the mom was sick in bed and Deedee and Dexter had to so all her housework for the day. Deedee made a pie and Dexter was eating it and said, "This pie is good! But I can't quite put my finger to what flavor it is." The conversation then went like this:
Dexter (As he continues to eat pie): What kind of pie is it?
Deedee: Guess!
Dexter: Is it apple?
Deedee: Noooooooo!
Dexter: Cherry?
Deedee: Nuh uh!
Dexter: Boysenberry?
Deedee: Nope!
Dexter: I give up. What is it?
Deedee: MUD!
Dexter (Oblivious at first): Oh I would have never-MUD?!
*Spits out pie*
Deedee: Dexter! Don't be rude!

And then there is the Family Guy Disney Universe Pie Song and the "Hair" pie Meg made for Brian.

There are several brands of pre-made packaged pasties that are abominations (they have peas and/or carrots in them!!!! Nooooooo!!) but the best always come from the little side-street independent bakers.
I always use rump steak and real butter, makes all the difference.

RE: Pie returneth

And how can a pie be "hand raised?" Did they feed it with a bottle until it got bigger and it was shoved into a hot oven where it had a very slow painful death?

I doubt it would survive the journey. But if you know a good recipe.... Smile
