DVB-T and suckage

Long story short:

I have a working arial, but the BBC encrypt all the HD streams and on top of that it seems I have the terrible luck to pick the weakest possible signal for BBC 3 when recording, and have a corrupted glitchy horrible mess as a result.

Just ranting out loud.

RE: DVB-T and suckage

As an example of what I mean, look at this when I change to the default BBC3 for recording, the one broadcast from a transmitter that's technically out of range in my area:

Quote:
cycle: 229  d_time: 0.112 s  Sig: 44975  SNR: 64764  BER: 12286  UBLK: 0  Stat: 0x1f [SIG CARR VIT SYNC LOCK ]
cycle: 230  d_time: 0.112 s  Sig: 44975  SNR: 64764  BER: 12130  UBLK: 0  Stat: 0x1f [SIG CARR VIT SYNC LOCK ]
cycle: 231  d_time: 0.120 s  Sig: 44975  SNR: 64507  BER: 12052  UBLK: 0  Stat: 0x1f [SIG CARR VIT SYNC LOCK ]
cycle: 232  d_time: 0.168 s  Sig: 44975  SNR: 64764  BER: 12156  UBLK: 0  Stat: 0x1f [SIG CARR VIT SYNC LOCK ]
cycle: 233  d_time: 0.164 s  Sig: 44975  SNR: 64507  BER: 11856  UBLK: 0  Stat: 0x1f [SIG CARR VIT SYNC LOCK ]

cycle: 234  d_time: 0.112 s  Sig: 45232  SNR: 64764  BER: 11916  UBLK: 0  Stat: 0x00 []

cycle: 235  d_time: 1.540 s  Sig: 36494  SNR: 63479  BER: 61452  UBLK: -1  Stat: 0x1f [SIG CARR VIT SYNC LOCK ]
cycle: 236  d_time: 0.361 s  Sig: 36494  SNR: 62965  BER: 70562  UBLK: -1  Stat: 0x1f [SIG CARR VIT SYNC LOCK ]
cycle: 237  d_time: 0.111 s  Sig: 36494  SNR: 63736  BER: 65914  UBLK: 43  Stat: 0x1f [SIG CARR VIT SYNC LOCK ]
cycle: 238  d_time: 0.112 s  Sig: 36494  SNR: 63993  BER: 63300  UBLK: -1  Stat: 0x1f [SIG CARR VIT SYNC LOCK ]
cycle: 239  d_time: 0.188 s  Sig: 36494  SNR: 62965  BER: 68018  UBLK: -1  Stat: 0x1f [SIG CARR VIT SYNC LOCK ]

The important bits here are the "Sig:" bit, which drops quite massively, and when I try to play the raw MPEG stream in mplayer I get this:

Quote:

[mpeg2video @ 0x8ab2700]ac-tex damaged at 2 25
[mpeg2video @ 0x8ab2700]ac-tex damaged at 8 26

[mpeg2video @ 0x8ab2700]00 motion_type at 4 28
[mpeg2video @ 0x8ab2700]00 motion_type at 1 29
[mpeg2video @ 0x8ab2700]ac-tex damaged at 9 30

[mpeg2video @ 0x8ab2700]mb incr damaged
[mpeg2video @ 0x8ab2700]ac-tex damaged at 8 33
[mpeg2video @ 0x8ab2700]00 motion_type at 10 34

[mpeg2video @ 0x8ab2700]concealing 1395 DC, 1395 AC, 1395 MV errors

By comparision, live BBC 3 on the local transmitter there are precisely ZERO errors in the stream.

Kaffeine (the software I used for recording, naively assuming it'd use the good signal) is absolute rubbish.

Would this one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VLC_media_player have the functionality you're looking for? I think I remember to have used it for encoding, but from a stream, not a TV signal.

VLC is what i've been using for viewing live, or mplayer - but recording is a bit more fiddly - you can record from DVB streams but it doesn't have scheduled recordings.

I can also write my own script for scheduling recordings, but there's got to be good software already out there for this. In fact, if I can get kaffeine to use the right transmitter, it otherwise works brilliantly - it's just the fact it uses the weakest signal it can which causes this issue.

Oh, just a note - there's no difference between a digital TV stream, a DVD and a streaming MPEG2 video online - all use the same codec.

DVB just sends MPEG data over the air, sometimes with an annoying layer of crypto on top, it also streams other data such as EPG (Electronic Programme Guide) and subtitles.

It must have been recorded on Mercury or Venus. Big Grin
