First human to walk on alien ground has died

It's a shame he never got to see us go back there and set up a base.

Since Magneto didnt say:

Aug. 25, 2012

Neil Armstrong, the astronaut who became first to walk on the moon as commander of Apollo 11, has died. He was 82 years old.

Armstrong had heart surgery several weeks ago, and a statement from his family said he died following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures.

Wow. Sad.  At least he got to live a full, amazing life, and do amazing things Smile

Fluffed his big line "A small step for one man". And still had it go down in history. Will be remembered as one of history's greatest ever adventurers.

Ninjaed.

It seems somehow right that someone who went to the moon should get to see us go back.

I do wish we could have heard what he'd have said when we go back.

But really, there will always be people to say great things when great things happen.

His footsteps will stay  on the moon forever.

I kept thinking of Neil Armstrong all day yesterday, the moon landing, how old he was getting, I just couldn't get him out of my mind.  How's that for coincidence?

Luna 2019, anyone? Use a Dragon capsule for the command module, build a lander, use a Falcon 9 Heavy to launch the propulsion module... meh, we could do it...

RE: First human to walk on alien ground has died

He played a major part in the biggest achievement in space-related history. It was sad that he didn't live to see, others live near the spot where he took his first steps onto the moon.

Armstrong in short was not just an American hero, but a hero for all mankind. May he rest in peace.

It's a true tragedy that he'll never get to see the future exploration of space by mankind (if we ever do get off this rock that is - long long term it's "get off the earth, or die out").

His death is a great loss to the whole of mankind.

With the current state of scientific knowledge, that was never going to happen - for it to happen either spaceflight would have to be more advanced or medicine would have to be more advanced in order to enable such an old man to see anything like a lunar colony.

Maybe one day we'll get a lunar colony and his original landing site will be preserved as a historical landmark, that seems quite fitting but it's no replacement for the man himself.

I don't believe that for a minute.  Speaking for my own country, if we invested half as much money in space exploration and research as we do in global conquest, we would have moon bases right now.  As it stands, the middle eastern wars take up half of our deficit.  Space exploration and research is measured in the small millions.  No wonder our technology is limited.  There's just no budget for it.

So true.  Think what we humans could do if we'd only TRULY work together for once, rather than fight like so many primitive tribes.  We'd have probably got at least Mars settled by now.

I disagree, my view is that if something doesn't violate the laws of physics then it will eventually be done so long as humanity sticks around long enough - a lunar base is pretty trivial in the scheme of things.
