New gaming console called OUYA which is open sourced
Yesterday I've seen an article on Yahoo about some kind of new gaming console called the OUYA (pronounced Oh yeah?) and to be honest, I have no idea... But here's a picture of the new console with controller, can you say "COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT?"
Honestly, can you at least name three or more consoles this thing has ripped off?
1. PlayStation/ Sega (controller)
2. Nintendo GameCube (design of console)
But the design is not why I want to buy this new contraption, nope, it's because there's leaks about it being opened source from what I've read from this link The Verge: OUYA A $99 hackable android game console created by Yves Behar . Does AFF knows what this means ? Every member on this forum site who's into game designing can make games for this thing!
Isn't that exciting?
And I can't wait to buy it in a year or two when the hype is calmed and the prices are lowered. So like I said before, any AFF member here who's into game designing should definitely check this thing out when it's finally released to the public.
Here's some links to a couple of articles for further reading
RE: New gaming console called OUYA which is open sourced
Here's the Wikipedia article that explains more and better than I did Ouya Wikipedia, As well as the List of Ouya games announced and rumored to be created or ported the Ouya gaming console...
From what I understand, after reading a bit more on it, the console itself would roughly be the size of a rubix cube and have a modified version of the Android OS ice-cream Sandwich, which can be rooted. I've even read (from Wikipedia) that you can also buy a developer's version or whatever, which is really pricey...
I'm not sure if the thing takes any kind of gaming disks and I think (and fear) that you would have to download the games, unless some already available right-out-of-the-box.
But from what I've read, there's no licensing fee but any game you develop must be free-to-play, unless you develop add-ons and upgrades or etc... So yeah I kind of want to check this thing out and hopefully be able to modify the OS or install Linux on it lol

Isn't designing a console to be hackable self-defeating? It's always been my impression that the point of developing the console market was so that games could be released with inherent DRM and could not be hacked without special equipment or access to company secrets or something.

Okay to be honest, I was hoping to catch the attention of everyone into game designing on AFF and though this console would be perfect to get their finished game idea's unto a popular console... :/

Actually, that would be pretty cool to play a video game written and designed by a fellow AFF Aspie
and it wouldn't need to be limited just to console games but windows, mac or even linux OS platform if you have the software and a bit of creativity then you can probably create something awesome with it

Popped up on who's online, so apologies for the bump:
I've had a load of games ideas myself and have the technical skills, sadly I lack the artistic skills for the graphical side of things, and these days the time - otherwise i'd happily develop a bunch of games for all platforms, already got a bunch of libraries and scripts for compiling the same code for these platforms:
Linux
Windows
Sony PSP
PS3

The point of a games console is an easy to setup and easy to maintain system for playing games - the fact it's harder to hack them to do what you want is actually a negative for the end user, not a positive.

That was my point--their design benefits the publisher. I suppose plugging a cartridge in is easier than installing a game to run in the operating system, but why can't games be released for PC that come on bootable media themselves? The benefit of being able to multitask and to switch games without restarting the whole system must negate that potential for the PC market. But for consoles, it is the primary, if not the only, market.

My friend and I are good at designing. My friend is multitalented. Maybe we could collaborate?
If I offended you, please let me know via pm. I tend to do it without realizing it. I can be clueless as to how my humor comes across. Please be nice about it.
