Gravedigger

Gravedigger

I was bare I was lonely
but not all alone,
and I waited patiently
for you to come home,

then the yarn was unwound
you called me to say
that you don’t see the pleasure
of coming any day.

So I cried and I wondered
what else could I do?
you had promised me pleasure
and my heart set on you.

Then the door rang, I answered
it was an old man
he said "someone is waiting
down gravel-street lane."

And he took me by hand
and led me away
and he said "there’s a fellow
who turns in his grave

who was waiting in shadows
for someone to come
who was buried in hollows
of logs and dirt scum".

So I tarried and shoveled
and dug up the grave
never questioned or wondered
if it was okay.

Yet I felt there’s no harm
in digging a hole
even if old man’s a liar
and I was a fool.

So I went on with working
and hoping to see
what the treasure was hidden
beneath our four feet.

And a moment came when
I realized the joke
that I dug my self in
a deep hole with no rope.

And the old man stood over
and laughed down at me
he cackled and hollered
"how thick could you be?"

I stood solemn and sadly
awaiting his hand
he would not bend to help me
though I'm sure he could have.

So I sat in despair
and cried in my grave
I had put my self there
with no one to come save.

But a clever idea
popped into my head
and I dug a bit deeper
a niche like a step.

I had created something
to help me get out
and I felt quite accomplished
to climb to the top.

I dusted my clothes off,
walked towards the old man,
and I looked at him closer
then stretched out my hand

and we shook on the deal,
I would not go back home
for I found a new zeal
to keep carrying me on.

So there was my story
and how I survived
even though I was lonely
and left there to die,

For I'm the gravedigger
I dug my own grave
and when I cried for help
it was I who would save.

And if you're ever lonely
and feel left to die
you can count on the old man
to tell you a lie.

I also created a tune in my head, well something close Scarborough Fair, to this poem... But I like having ADHD and having music stuck in my head cause then I can mix them up or rewrite the songs Big Grin

I really enjoyed the read. And it ended with the "best" message I could have hoped. Excellent, if I do say so myself. Thank you for sharing.
