RE: Olympics

I volunteered for Sydney 2000, got a silly uniform and pushed some equipment around for the opening ceremony. The buzz out there in the middle of it all was amazing. I don't think I watched more than one or two events though, not even on TV.

I can't understand the pride people feel about someone they don't even know winning a race, just because they happen to be a citizen of your country.

RE: Olympics

The whole concept of gettign worked up about watching other people taking exercise baffles me.
What really brought it home to me was that, on Tuesday, the main headlines of the 6 o'clock news were all about the Olympics. No political stories, no crime, no famous deaths, no celebrity news. The bloody Olympics have taken precedence over everything. And they hadn't even started!

Thank god the BBS Proms run concurrently.

RE: Olympics

I find it weird when someone whose only connection with a sport is watching it on TV says "WE" won a medal.

RE: Olympics

I'm well and truly over it.  The hype over other people getting hot and sweaty is amazing. What a pity that global warming or starvation in Africa or eradication of childhood diseases or environmental degradation or the global recession aren't Olympic events, they'd be solved in a week.

RE: Olympics

weren't the Olympics played nude in Ancient Greece times? :/

Yeah I don't see much use for it except big businesses using the Olympics to do heavy advertising, like during the Super Bowl or After Thanksgiving/Christmas times....

If McDonald’s was honest then they'd advertise "McDonald's, WE OWN THE OLYMPICS!" instead of whatever their advertising now....

The competitors had to swear an oath that they were "free men of pure Hellenic blood who have never committed any sacriligious act", as well.  Which meant that non-Helenes, women, etc. weren't eligible.

RE: Olympics

I like watching snippets of the Olympics with my family (my dad would always make jokes)...but never understood the hype or the patriotism very much.

and, i don't have a TV currently, so I can skip out on the hype altogether. Probably won't see anything except ~amazing!~ replays lol.

So the Hellenic bloodline was sacred or something?

RE: Olympics

To be honest Genesis, I can't remember the last time I rooted for America. I dislike this country but not to point of treason or being a traitor....

Of course if this was posted somewhere else on the internet, I'd be sneered at, hated, called all sorts of things, and would be compared to Hitler.

Why do people even have the nerve to compare someone to Hitler after everything he had done in the past? OMFG ! Just because you disagree with someone doesn't make them Hitler!

RE: Olympics

I thought Michael Phelps was pretty impressive, he was an American, he also has ADHD. I also like Ussain Bolt.

Those are the only two olympians I am more familiar with (probably because the China olympics was the first one I truly followed; I had dreams of world peace *sigh*)... I also know about nadia comenci (because when I was younger my dad would say "Nadia come-and-eat!" to everybody whenever dinner was ready).
