Dell Latitude CPt laptop won't (Fully) turn on Help!

I'm asking for help about my Dell Latitude which won't fully turn on.

And what I mean by it not fully turning on is that when I push the power button, the power light indicator lights up and all (caps, num, etc.. indicator) lights up for exactly 5 seconds before going dead again.

Maybe the motherboard is fried or something with the power supply has gone wrong ? Which I really hope isn't the case. Also I think there's some code with the indicator lights for technicians or something ?

I've heard that resetting the CMOS battery by unplugging it and removing the battery then holding down the power button for two minutes will sometimes get it to come on, but I'm not sure if that's the correct trick.

So if anyone could help me or knows the full CMOS battery trick that would be appreciated. Also please PM if you can help me and/or need more technical information about my Laptop.

I love this laptop way too much and have plans for it, so I'd like to get it to work again without having to pay for technical repairs if I could avoid it....

Thank you....

Absolutely no idea, but good luck!

Are you booting it up while it is plugged in, and it is still losing power?

I'm by no means a computer expert, so forgive me if I may be pointing out the obvious.

Naw your okay Big Grin

The thing is the power light does come on as well as the keyboard lock indicators but the machine doesn't power up at all. It's just these lights lighting up.  :/

I've heard that Dell laptops were notorious for their motherboards over heating or something like that.

By the way I'm no computer expert neither if you've seen that I dominate this section with my failures and such....

Hey, that's how you learn, right?

But if that were the case, I should be a computer genius....

I've got one that does that.  If I leave it plugged in for too long, I think some kind of safety thing will trip, and I won't be able to power it up.  There's also a power button on the cord, if that tells you anything, and it turns the current on and off.  Apparently, whatever that's supposed to do doesn't work, so without leaving it unplugged or turned on most of the time, it's necessary to pull the batery out.  After doing so it works normally.

And this is the normal power batery, nothing that's hooked into the motherboard.  But I don't see how a total loss of power would damage the computer.  It is a laptop, afterall, and designed to be portable.

A power button on the power cord? I'm holding the power supply right now and I can't see no button or anything on it Sad

Hm... I wish I knew what I can do to help you. I had an issue with my Toshiba (the first Toshiba I owned, not the current one). Is there a recall on the Dell you have? If so, try to see what you can do to compensation or whatever help you can get for it.

My first Toshiba had serious issues and then I found out there was motherboard problems with it ever since that model came out. They were too silly to do a total recall on that model. :-/

Now the next laptop I am going to get one day better be a Loctus.

have you tried hitting Tab when booting to see the boot up screen, maybe that will tell you how far it is booting or give an error message

Actually, it wont even turn on Sad The indicator lights light up but it doesn't actually turn all the way on.

When it was working the lights would flash for a split second then it'll power on, now it doesn't even do that anymore...

I'd like to keep this laptop cause I absolutely loved the feel of the laptop's keyboard, it had a very nice flow to it, but I really can't explain it thought.
