Forgot to add. It has been demonstrated that police abuse their autority far less often when they have cameras in their patrol cars. Even if the cameras don't reveal abuse, they can do a lot of good.

On the other hand, when I'm teaching kids at my dojo, I'm used to the parents sitting at the back of the room, watching class. I don't object to that, since I am in a situation where I have the ability to use authority to harm other people. With martial arts, some parents want to make sure that the setting is safe for their kids. My instructor has always been supportive of that, and I wholeheartedly agree with him.

Teachers in special education are in exactly the same position but they do object to it.

What if you were to give some extra tuition to one pupil after class.

I suspect you would insist on having somebody else there or video surveillance if only to protect yourself if something did go wrong.

I've only insisted on someone else being there if I was planning on sparring with the person or something like that. Mostly to make sure that someone outside the drill is there to let us know if we're, for example, getting too close to the walls.

I certainly have no objection if the student's parent wants to watch from the edge of the mats. That's never been a requirement, though.

The only time parent's are not permitted to watch is during promotion tests (which I don't take part in, once it's started). It can take around a year for kids to be ready to test for a new belt color. By that time, parents usually trust us enough to allow the instruction to be unsupervised.

RE: A sick society

I would never let my kids go somewhere if I felt like I wasn't allowed to go in.  At therapy, I sit behind a two-way mirror.  I attend all "drop off" events like birthday parties.  Confession was right out.

I do occasionally drop by their schools to drop something off.  I've never felt like i couldn't pop into the classroom.  I've even stayed for lunch and recess at oldest's school.  Plus, there is always at least one aid and one teacher in the special ed class that youngest has been in, and usually there are several classes at once which means 6 - 8 teachers and aids.  That made me feel better about leaving him there.

Still, I worry.  If anything ever happened, he just wouldn't have the words to tell me. Sad  He desperately needs the deaf/hard of hearing education and services, though.  School doesn't bother me, but the bus drivers and aids do.  They have no training to handle these kids, and we've had difficulties with the bus with both oldest and youngest.  They ride it only when necessary now.
