So, I've showed up to the open house. I was completely professional, and friendly to other candidates, and officers. I've completed the introduction. I spoke, humbly but confidently about my customer service, community service, and travel experience. I spoke about my passion for travel, and how my travel experiecnes shaped me to have the desire to serve others of a diverse background. In other words, I pput my education degree to work here. I tried to sell myself to the company by letting them know that my undrgraduate education trained me to better serve people in my community, thus give great customer service. I've been told by others that I did well giving an interesting introduction. I also didn't make 'cookie cutter' responses. Most people said the same cliches, I steered clear of that. Making a long story short: I've done my very best.
As a result, I still didn't get chosen for the forml interview, nor did I get chosen for the group interview. I've been sent away.
As I researched this company, I've read and had been warned of a few truths:
They judge on appearance.
They are prejudiced.
They seem to prefer cookie cutter ditsy *** personalities.
As for my experience, these are sooo true. Many of the women they picked weren't even dressed professionally, they didn't speak clearly, all told the same story, were blodne and skinny. One girl openly admitted that she didn't know why she wanted to do this job.
I've got mixed feelings. You guys will be mad at me for saying, but its very true in this case: I'm sure I wasn't chosen because
1. I'm no size 2 blonde barbie doll.
2. I'm not someone who fakes, and tries to use cliche answers.
3. Maybe I'm too smart, and the job isn't for me
4. Perhaps I don't have as much experience as others (but these women they selected lacked experience as well).
I'm kind of mad because
1. I would love the opportunity to see the world.
2. They probably judged me based on not being a barbie doll (I purposely decided not o place quotations around Barbie)
3. I need a job, some employment, income too damnit.
I hate to go there, but maybe being white, blonde and a size 0 is much more profitable.
This isn't to be racist, or to play victim, but I'm stating a reality that I experienced.
P.S. I did the smart thing, and asked the recruiters for feedback. They told me they weren't allowed to give any. That just proves that me, and other black women are most likely right about this. I'm not the only one saying this, a good majority of us believe the same thing has happened. So hmmmmm....
RE: why i didnt get selected for flight attendant job
I even demonstrated my knowledge of German and Russian. But, whatever. I assumed they would like that, as an international carrier. Guess they figured I'm 'over qualified'.
I'm just moving on with life, focusing on my advanced degree, and still applying to other jobs.
In a honesty, it probably is not a good work environment for me. I really have no business being all rash over this.
I wouldn't want to work for a company who is that shallow.
RE: why i didnt get selected for flight attendant job
Think about it this way. How many people applied for the job? Compare that to how many people they were looking to hire. Odds are pretty good there were more applicants than there were jobs. That means some people weren't going to get hired.
My condolences for not getting it. I know you wanted this one. Just try not to beat yourself up over it.
Friends will let you be who you are. Best friends will never let you forget it. I'm just trying to be everyone's best friend.
RE: why i didnt get selected for flight attendant job
You are overqualified for a job like that. Pure and simple.
They can train someone with minimal education to do a job like that, someone who will treat it as their end goal, their ultimate profession. They will not want to spend time and $$$$ training someone who is likely to get a better offer. Who might be treating it as a working holiday.
RE: why i didnt get selected for flight attendant job
I'm sorry... But it's probably a good thing... Flight attendants have the 2nd or first, I forgot which, suicide rate and you keep getting sick. If thats offensive tell me.
RE: why i didnt get selected for flight attendant job
Maybe you should have applied straight out of high school. They would also probably say flight attendants need to be fit and get in and out of seats, open emergency door, etc.
Before you get an advanced degree ask tough questions before you even register. Grill the dean on job prospects, I wish I had. Talk to your alma mater job office and see which careers match your personality. It is not too late to do college over. Don't hate the sociology faculty for wasting your time.
