Question  The term 'sperg' in internet culture- offensive?

I've seen the term 'sperg' thrown around quite around on websites - a abbreviated term from the word asperger as a noun for someone with aspergers.

Should we, or do you find this offensive? Is it a term to be reclaimed, such as 'aspie'?

not as endearing as aspie for sure. definitely, I prefer aspie, but if you want to reclaim it i wouldn't mind.

It sounds like the kind of degrading term that Something Awful would come up with.

Is the degrading aspect not disarmed if we embrace the term?

It sounds a little too much like a sexual euphemism for my tastes.

RE: The term 'sperg' in internet culture- offensive?

It depends entirely on the context, and perhaps the place its used, as well as the people.

On I2, where there is a much less sensitive (special snowflakes, those with a thin skin better not show up there)
and a relaxed atmosphere; terms like that can be used. A member, who is also a member here, and one who I daresay is quite a hawt young lady; I won't name her here in case she doesn't want me to just throw her name about. Out of respect for her basically. The term 'autard' was used. Not at all maliciously, in a thread title, then subsequently; and the term 'spazz' is used pretty often too. Its context was 'share your embarrassing autard moments. No maliciousness, no intent to insult, but a thread where people post their own embarrassing moments influenced by slipups in speaking the interpreted language 'neurotypical body/expressive language. In doing so, people give their explicit consent for those events to bee posted and repeated on I2. pretty funny they are too, shared amongst likeminded spesh people, bee it autie, people with MR, etc.

The atmosphere on intensity squared is far and away different from AFF, or...(ick) WP and their psycho mods with their tardrage and that fagg0t alex plank, with his funding from his arsewipe best friends...you KNOW who Wink

A post worded like that would be fine on I2, yet I would only use such terms on AFF under pretty uncommon circumstances, save for the context of reporting the third party use of the the less complimentary terms; E.g 'tard rage'  by for instance, a cock-addicted puppet like Plank. I don't want to offend my extended family, with people I have a lot of respect for here, like say, Ali, duckface, hannah capps,  etc. All people I value and consider friends.

Its all about the atmosphere of the place one uses, the ambiance, the people etc. the context used; even on I2, if some arselicking crackpot like meadow started deliberately trying to offend me, she is a contemptible, thin skinned lunatic, who has called me 'a retard with a mouth like a sewer'; and in general, all the names under the sun, nasty little crazy b1tch that she is. Water off a ducks back in my case, since I am pretty thick skinned, it takes quite a lot to offend me, I just tune it out when I know that is what someone is trying to do. In one case with meadow, what I did, was, after she posted her pic as an avatar, and then went on to be generally insulting, nasty and malicious to any and all intensians  who transgressed upon her thin skinned, mental-case little self-centered world, the members then made all sorts of parodies, holding her to the case of 'whats sauce for the goose, is sauce for the gander', I commented that if she is going to act like a self centered little meanspirited brat then she is going to get treated like one (I paraphrase, but thats pretty much what was made abundantly clear to her. I then got subjected to a torrent of vile abuse, in public and via PM, 'retard with a mouth like a sewer'. Got told to f uck off, spacker' and more.

If someone speaks to me in those terms, then no, I am not going to be very nice to them, and treat them like the sun doesn't shine, save  only from their anal sphincter. Hey ducky, did she give you shite too? Meadow, little brat that she is, insulted my friends as well as me, and wouldn't hold herself to the same set of standards that she applied to everybody else.

Probably why. I don't really tend to hang around on sites that degrade us.

From Urban Dictionary:
Sperglord:
Someone who feels the need to be correct and validate themselves by stating facts or truisms regardless of circumstance, despite being completely socially inept at gauging exactly how much of a nobgobbler this makes them.

See Crucifixion in anime page on wikipedia

Or just wikipedia which is edited by sperglords
