Facebook Birthdays

Something has been stressing me out:
On Facebook there are notifications about people's birthdays, but I never know who to say happy birthday to.

I think I should say it to everyone since I know that some people may feel left out or something; but to be honest I do not want to. In fact, I would rather not say happy birthday at all because I do not seriously mean it, but I said happy birthday to one person, and then I felt I had to say it to everyone (equal treatment since they are all "friends").

Now I am in a predicament. For these types of reasons (equal treatment, versus partial treatment, and general confusion) I hate facebook. I think I will just delete my fb account. ACtually I would rather delete most of my "friends" and just keep a few, but then I may make someone upset. Plus, Im not sure who really considers me a real friend so I dont even know who I would have to delete.

Has anyone else had these problems?

RE: Facebook Birthdays

Hi - i only send happy birthday messages if I mean it, which is only about half the time, so some people i ignore, but i don't even look at fb every day and hardly ever do updates, so I don't think people will be upset if they don't get a birthday message from me. If i was posting and commenting everywhere every day and didn't say happy birthday to someone, they might be miffed, but's not a big deal really.

There are lots of things about facebook that I don't like, in fact it's actually creepy, but I find the Events calendar thing useful and don't have any apps or all that crap. If there are people you don't like you can just ignore (switch off) all their updates, that's easier than un-friending them. They still see your stuff but you don't see theirs. The whole idea of being a 'friend' on fb is weird, but if it's someone I don't know well I just take it as meaning "I think you are ok /interesting in some way" and I don't mind that. I don't put personal or emotional stuff up, or photos, just sort if 'look at this thing I did' sort of posts.

is that all there is?

RE: Facebook Birthdays

I usually consider how important the person is to me. You could just limit it to people you know offline or that you have a particularly strong friendship with online.

Actually, if you check around at some of the birthday threads here, you might notice that I really hate just posting "Happy birthday" and leaving it at that. It's too boring for me, so I have to say something kind of silly or find a weird birthday picture.

Friends will let you be who you are. Best friends will never let you forget it. I'm just trying to be everyone's best friend.

I will try that.
I would hate deleting the account because #1. it doesn't actually delete, and #2. its hard enough trying to stay friends with people when i never "go out" and socialize.

I agree 100%. I have to make a joke, post a pic, and/or say something nice or relevant for that person- which it why I hate doing it on facebook because usually people dont remember me, then maybe they think im a creeper.

If you feel like a creep for doing it, maybe that's someone that you don't have to wish a happy birthday.

haha good point.

It felt very satisfying unsubscribing to a ton of people just now.

RE: Facebook Birthdays

Haha, I thought this thread was about Facebook "being born" (at the stock market).

My comment: When one share costs 3 $, remember that I've predicted it. Big Grin Big Grin

RE: Facebook Birthdays

My rule of thumb is to avoid all birthdays on FB, unless they are REALLY close like family or best friends.

RE: Facebook Birthdays

Don't worry about it, I almost never wish people happy birthday on Facebook, either because I see them in person and so I can say happy birthday to them then, or because they simply aren't close enough friends. Just say happy birthday to your family members if you're confused.

Don't defriend people because of it, though. They really won't like it.

RE: Facebook Birthdays

I finally solved my problem-

I completely dismantled my facebook account (deleted all photos, messages, posts, likes, friends, etc) and then deactivated it. That way, if someone hacks the account, its utterly useless. I also changed my fb name, birthday, contact email, and username. Took a hell of a long time...!

RE: Facebook Birthdays

It usually doesn't hold much weight should you neglect to wish everyone a happy birthday.

I would only wish a happy birthday to those who are important to me.
