Somehow the way that politics are set up, is way too dull to me. You get your votes, you're in that position for an odd amount of years then nothing else important happens..... except 444, or 9/11, or Watergate.... But thats beside the point.

And then there's little things like the PATRIOT act, invasive TSA screenings, warrantless wire-taps, undeclared wars, torture in secret prisons, Wall St. bailouts, health care, student loans, gay marriage, etc...

Gore vs. Bush was what I was referring to. I remember it pretty well, but I was also 18 and in college at the time.

You still have people killing and being killed in a pointless foreign war because of the outcome of that election.

True.... but you know what they said about Kabul along time ago? They said that Kabul used to be a place of luxury, and when the Soviets came, alot of people left. After the Soviets ended their part of the war, the Taliban took over and the basic necessities around Kabul collapsed. Making it more of a hellhole instead of a place of luxury.

Yep. The place would certainly be a lot better if Bush the First hadn't set up and funded the Taliban, and instead let the Afghani people kick out the Soviets themselves.

Probably worth noting here that no military force in the history of the world has ever successfully invaded Afghanistan. It's just hard to invade and conquer a nomadic society.

The pointless foreign war I referred to was Iraq. No WOMD, no point.

Taking out Al Qaeda in Afghanistan was necessary, although I think it could have been done very differently.

Actually I thought Charlie Wilson the congressman from Texas funded it....

I could be wrong (probably am in this case). Either way, it does illustrate the effects of elections and American politics on world events.

It's a shame we only get the two options. I know there's always someone else running, but let's be honest, third parties never win anything. The system really needs to be fixed. Don't you guys have proportional representation over there in the UK? I'd take that.

If you vote for the lesser of 2 evils on the basis that "third parties never win anything" then, IMO, you are merely reinforcing the 2 party system and wasting your vote.

In a 2 party race, though, I think that it is okay to vote for party A if you are particularly fearful of party B gaining power. Even when party A does not match your positions all that well.

More seriously, third parties have become second parties in US history before.  Unfortunately you don't see a lot of advertisement for them, nor any kind of media support.

There was a Rent is Too Damn High party in New York, during the last election.  I would've given my support.  The lowest monthly rent I could find at that time was more than half my monthly income, and I was working full-time without breaks for school.

Oh, it's been successfully invaded a great many times.

It's just a *little* bit of a *** to hold onto, is all. Which the Russians found out, as did the British (Three times!), and the Mongols before us, and the Persians before them, and the Greeks before them, and the Coalition has found out yet again. It is not known as the Graveyard of Empires for nothing, y'know. Still, those who learn from History are doomed to watch others repeat it, I suppose...
