Confused by what I hope is a lie.
Where should I begin. Well there's not really a start as most of you know my story, but in short ever since high school began, my life has been practically a living hell. From "swirlies" to sexual harassment to the most horrible of rumors, to being beaten half to death to downright bitc*yness.
They say things like "high school days are the best of your life." or "It's a lot harder out there" or "you get it easy"
This confuses me. Are people in denial on what the real high school situation is. Are people stupid or oblivious to the truth. What will it take to stop them from being this way.
School's really haven't changed. They claim to the "stronger against bullying" while from what I've seen in my life and what I've heard from others, they haven't changed a bit, in fact they may have gotten worse. This may be due to the media and an increase in technology perhaps. But I'm certain it's because the school system is a corrupt, liar and isn't working.
I hope I'm right, I really am. Otherwise, millions, possibly billions including myself will not survive "the real world"
It has been estimated that due to the school system, by 2020 or 2030 half of the entire global population will suffer from mental illnesses, mainly depression. Is this what it will take for the school system to change?

RE: Confused by what I hope is a lie.
when I hit the words "Stupid and oblivious to the truth" I think you hit the nail on the head...
I'll read on now... IT DOES GET BETTER...
ahhhh.. added in edit after reading your whole post.
GREAT POST - sadly I agree with you 100%.
sadly - maybe it does NOT get better for the many who do end up "ill" as you said, because they were in denial for too long.. and well anyway. (I have been VERY concerned for the future as well - too sad..for the exact reasons you described)
Great post. you will be okay... you see behind the curtain.

Some people say that college is better than high school. I know that. lol. If half of humans suffer from mental illness by that time it is because human race is fail. Sheesh. Some people can be so fail.
I know some adults do use this against younger people, and they may also take advantage of saying whatever they want because the young person doesn't know better or isn't perceived as it. Some jobs are hard but some adults may lie or exaggerate about their specific life to a younger person because they can, because the younger person can't easily counter it. I think "it gets harder out in the real world" is a phrase that catches onto some people and some people may not even be comparing the pain of HS with the pain of their adult life and are just thinking about the *different* issues you face when you become an adult- that there's other stuff you have to learn how to do and do correctly. So I think some people just like being able to tell a lower or different group that their group is this and that, and has this or that issues or that its awful or horrible for them. It worries me too, all the people saying their asses drop or they work their living tail off. I think some of those people are exaggerating, though.
So, some people like saying it as "points" over you, some of these people have gotten in the habit of acting that way and saying that, and so they automatically say that to you when you talk about non-adult issues, some people don't feel like understanding or listening to others situations properly, etc.
What really annoys me is that some of the people who say that may also tell others thats just how it is and not to complain about life (and YES, people talking about the "adult" world). Gee, such blatant hypocrisy. They just use whatever side of the card they want when it bests suits them- whatever side allows them to tell someone else theyre just pitying themselves. Some people enjoy doing that.
I myself am pretty nervous about adult hood still, there is all this ***, car insurance, health insurance, tax forms, (I read about hiring someone to do your taxes though) etc... and I still havent picked out what my career is (I am 16). I don't know how people even move out before having a college education- like what job are you getting with HS education that makes you wanna move out? What about all the stuff you have to pay for! I suspect I am over thinking it though. And there are other adults that can help me xD.
I always wonder why
When you look down into my eyes
My feeling swiftly changed between happiness and sorrow
And tears begin to fall
I’m not you and you are not me
But your pain becomes my pain
When you are sad, I’m the one who foolish cry
When you are wounded, my heart is hurt more

The way I look at it is that in high school, you get free room and board. That goes away later, when you have to make it on your own.
Socially, things do get easier after high school. People mature, you learn more about interactions, and you'll more likely be accepted for who you are.

High school was crap. I was in a hurry to become an adult and got there quickly and have never looked back on my childhood with sentiment or a sense of joy. That said I do love seeing my own children's childhood and will try to make it a special one.
In your case, less "tetchy", perhaps, and more "overbearing, obnoxious arsehole", if it's all the same with you, Bloke. Is it ok? Oh, good!

Thinking back on it, for me, high school looked like paradise compared to middle school. I transferred to a different high school where no one knew me. That helped a lot.

RE: Confused by what I hope is a lie.
Hang on to the belief that it does get better. For instance, in high school it was my word against usually a group of others as to why I was in fights. Who did the teachers believe? The ones who met the adults eyes and lied through their teeth, not me who'd been defending myself but was so angry I was incoherent. So I ended up beaten *and* in trouble, very unfair. But I've found as I mature that people will tend to listen to me more, rather than automatically believing the manipulative people. Plus as d_olson said, you will find more people who are mature enough to be more open to embracing a little neurodiversity. Sadly, of course, there's always the other type, those manipulative jocks and princesses whose best days probably WERE when they were big fish in small ponds. It must be a shock for that type of person to leave school and realize that the world is big and they are no longer the centre of it.

RE: Confused by what I hope is a lie.
High School is a step in life, that everyone may succeed, or sometimes fail in.... Its a step towards what may or may not be the entrance to the real world known as "The Human Society." Yet to my POV (Point of View) Its best to go through it once... cause going through it twice would be what others call... A living hell.... When I entered High School, it was a strange environment. You had the Underclassmen and the Upperclassmen.... Everyone in tradition back in the states pick on the Freshman, a teacher admittingly joking once said "Freshmen are just a fill-in to get into High School early"
But it wasn't just the Freshman that caused these little dilemmas, it was all the sub-groups within. The Artsie Kids, the Preppies, the jocks, the popular people, the openingly gay people, etc, etc (because the list goes on and on) [Well maybe you get the picture] Things in that environment known as the American High School in a suburb close to Chicago by nearly an hour away, were quite exciting for some people, yet quite scary, and boring.
Whatever happens for you in your school, try your best to enjoy it, or better yet.... Survive. Surely I know nothing about Northern Ireland (UK) schools.... but whatever happens.... make the most of it.... because sometimes after you graduate from High School. You won't have to see those people again.

RE: Confused by what I hope is a lie.
I actually found high school okay. I got teased and ridiculed, of course, but that was like water off a duck's back to me.
When I was in grade school it was much worse, nasty physical abuse and my parents and teachers always put the blame on me.
I remember one idiot a year older than me who was short and very strong for his age, used to give me a hard time. No big deal. I saw him a year or 2 after leaving high school, by which stage I was a good foot taller than him and had about 30 kilos (70 pounds) at least on him. I would have said hi, but he walked past me staring at the ground and looking at me out of the corner of his eye as if he was worried about something. Rather pathetic when you think about it.
There were a couple of teachers I would have liked to run into after school was over, just to tell them what I thought of them.
Life as an adult is way better in my experience. Maybe some people did have wonderful carefree childhoods, but I think mostly it is short memories and rose coloured glasses.

RE: Confused by what I hope is a lie.
I hated school. Being the bookish intellectual type, I've always found that if I want to learn something, I'll learn it. I can read. I don't need to sit in a class with other people and have someone tell me it at a mind-numbingly slow pace. Hence, I learnt next to nothing about anything I was interested in by going to school - I was either ahead or not interested. May as well have stayed home.

For me, primary school was like a paradise. As it's said in the good game with the bad ending
Garrus- "May you be in heaven for half an hour before the devil knows your dead."
Why do i put this up, you say. Well I know Primary school is around 7 years and normally high school is five or six, I've realized that the high school years seem a hell ((no pun intended)) of a lot longer than primary school did. For me yes, comparing my experience of the two primary school is like heaven and high school is like hell.

I really don't know how anyone can be in high school in the modern world. When I was there (1960's), one could nestle down in a nice crack and wait out the 4 years.
Now, with NCLB (in the US), everyone is in your business. I would not survive.
College/grad school was great, but I think I am far less social than other AFFers. I don't want to have friends, but so many people here stress about that.
