I am a self-diagnosed Aspie (soon to be formally tested) with a 3yo son on the autism spectrum. Recently I visited Amazon.com for information on a book titled "The Everyday Advocate: Standing Up For Your Autistic Child" by Areva Martin, Esq. I have not yet purchased the book, but plan to soon.
Anyhow, in the book reviews section I saw one from an anti-cure mom in which she says, "The author is a neurodiversist and anti-curist and is not afraid to tell you that. I think it's definitely wrong to push these particular beliefs onto parents who are new to autism. This is their journey, not hers... If you want real science, read 'children with starving brains' or a similar book. That's where the real answers are." The book she recommended is a pro-cure, anti-vaccine book.
My response to her was, "So it's not okay to push neurodiversity beliefs onto newly diagnosed families, but you would recommend a book advocating the belief that vaccines trigger autism, which has been disproved by multiple clinical studies that you claim were covertly manipulated by Big Pharma? In other words, neurodiversity is an "odd movement", but government conspiracy theories are normal. Thank you for convincing me to read this book."
The conversation immediately devolved into an anti-vaccine rant where she DEMANDED that I PROVE a long list of questions regarding vaccine safety, berated me for not wanting to cure my child (whose autism I believe is a GIFT, not a CURSE). After being berated for a couple of days, I did some research (I am a master's degree candidate) and posted answers citing scientific research studies refuting ALL of her questions. Her only response was to call me stupid, immature, mentally ill, and a troll.
No big deal, I've been called names before, but she has also recruited a gang of anti-vaxxers to team up on me, joining her in attacking me for my beliefs and calling me names.
You don't know me, so I'm not asking you to stand up for me personally. I'm no saint, I've done my share of name-calling back, but have deleted most of my derogatory comments in the name of fairness. All I'm asking is if you would be willing to visit the forum and take a moment to speak up for neurodiversity?
easy , just report your first post and ask for removal
Thanks. I deleted any of my posts that were negative (trying to be more mature about the situation), then reported the posts that attacked me. Amazon has removed several of her posts (and one of mine that I must have missed. Oops!)
My final comment to the thread was:
"I'll tell you what. Since you've been such an open-minded, gracious host, I will delete all of my negative comments and only leave the posts that directly answered your questions. Then I will leave. If you choose after that point to continue revisiting the forum and calling me a stupid, immature, kindergartner, 6-year-old, secretly-posing-as-the-author, mentally ill Nazi who plays with Mr. Hand all day, then that will be your choice. After all, it is your book review."
I feel better now. Am I the only obsessive crazy person that lets myself get sucked into useless arguments with stupid people online?

Haha, no. I was on a website called gotoquiz.com and I said I didn't like their stupid retarded jokes, not in those words (I said I didn't like randomness) and the little kindergardeners (which were actually around 16) decided to get butthurt and pitch a fit.

Nope, I think we've all experienced dealing with silly people at one point or another. I admire the way you managed to bring a halt to the last exchange in dignity
"Uh-huh...I thought you were leaving."
"Came back to reply to Deb. Replying to you was a bonus. What do you expect from a Nazi nutter troll with the intellect of a 6 year old? ;-) "
"*facepalm* "
Best pwned moment ever

Hi connorsmom, I went to your link and couldn't stop laughing at some of the claims that the anti-vaxxer came out with! Did you all know that, according to the AV, there are now one in every twenty-nine children being born with autism? And that's even BEFORE they've been given a vaccine! LOL XD Go us, we'll soon rule the world simply due to numbers!
I love the way anti-vaxxer curebies tend to foam at the mouth with spittle flying everywhere when you poke them. It makes them seem so calm, logical and believable! XD

To be ruled by tradition just means that you're letting yourself be outvoted by the dead.

Thanks Alison (and everyone else). It's good to know there are still sensible people in the world. I'll stop poking at the crazies.
wtf? I don't even. Treatment for this case: When you're wrong, just give up the fight! This person you describe just didn't want to face up... sheesh...
I always wonder why
When you look down into my eyes
My feeling swiftly changed between happiness and sorrow
And tears begin to fall
I’m not you and you are not me
But your pain becomes my pain
When you are sad, I’m the one who foolish cry
When you are wounded, my heart is hurt more
