Poll: Do you believe these numbers?
Yes, I believe it if I read it.
Ni, I never believe anything I read.
These new "stats" are helpful to raise "awareness"
These new "stats" are so unrealistic that they will hurt "awareness" because people will assume people are gaming the system
Other  - for example: how many people do I know and how many of them fit the "profile" in  my opinion.

RE: "Autism more common" 1 in 88 in U.S. as per CDC

I didnt care for the way the news people are saying the children have been stricken with Autism.

AutSpks has never done us a favor, by acting like Autism in children is something new.

I also want to yell at the parents "quit crying, just love and properly raise your child." Autist or not.

I'm not anti-social; I'm just not user friendly

I dont believe suddenly so many kids are Autistic. When they change the DSM next year I think we will see these numbers greatly decline. I know in my area just of people I know atleast 1 out of every 3 families has a child on the spectrum. Whats funny is alot of these kids they say have PDD and Aspergers and I dont see any signs of it. I have a cousin who they claim 2 of their children have PDD and im telling you there is NOTHING wrong with these kids, they dont have any symptoms when im around them, they are normal bright kids with behavior issues  but the mom filled out a ??er with some strange doctor and well they have PDD.. its all bull !I think its being over diagnoised Its sort of like the new ADHD for years every other kid had ADHD. I read a article the other day that said the way it is now , just about everyone fits on the spectrum .I believe it is true..When we have my daughter tested, I did actual video and presented it . I went into details of what her lifes been like ,I told them to screw those ??ers. I wanted NO part of them !
Sorry kind of went off topic, but sick of all the news and stuff acting like this is some epedimic ..

I heard recently the number was 1 in every 88 for the general population, and 1 in every 56 for military families.

Seems odd that it would be higher in military families.

That's what was reported and my guess is the quality of medical care, during birth and delivery for example, may be lower than general populations. It's near impossible to sue the government, for example, so standard of care may be of question. That's just my guess for why a statistic like that would exist at all. I'd have to look online to see if there's a link to reflect any data on it but I heard it advertised on television recently.

It looks like I remembered it wrong. The 1 in 88 figure is for military families and the general population is thought to be around 1 in 150.

I sure do not know where you got those numbers.. the "newest" headline says 1 in 88 ("extrapolated from 13 areas") in the U.S.

and 1 in 54 boys -see 1st post and title of thread.

Yes skyblue- to the quit crying and love your child and (ahem - raise it /them properly)

I think this all may be a very bad sign of the times for the 8 year olds being raised today.... a lot of people must be failing them... these #'s are epidemic (but NOT of autism) not alone...

I searched (googled) 1 in 56   and then 1 in 56 military families and then 1 in 56 miltary families has an autist

and got nothing - only this:
mothers of autistic children earn 56% less income, study says

why not post the link?
