RE: The fun with dummy Network Cards

I just hope my antivirus and firewall stuff does its' job - can you explain where to put a network card? and why having yet another thing attached to a computer would make it easier or safer to take care of?

Do you mean like if a neighbor was trying to get a signal (or the old days when we used to hear of people driving by and hacking) if they piggyback to your signal then it may be just as easy to see what you seed and get into your files/

(this is how little I know, this is what I am thinking a network card is) I have a couple of dongles to pick up wireless signals (I think there is a better way but did not have the time to figure (or configure)...

(Any computer knowledgeabale person must read these words of mine and be like - wow, so clueless - ! Smile or what on earth is she talking about ?!

Ignore my post if you want-  I am actually going to google what an open port is now.

RE: The fun with dummy Network Cards

Actually the idea sounds more and more stupider the more I read or think about it. I'm thinking of adding a laptop now to the server and giving it my IP address. I'd put fake text files with credit card or other important things to steal, with messages like "Hello, thank you for breaking into my Windows box, enjoy feeling really stupid and come back for more". But yet again they'd come back and search for my computer on the server to try to steal again, or commit revenge :/ But the extra network card Windy is to act like a decoy, but now that I'm learning a little more about networking, this topic sounds really stupid now. BTW I'm practically clueless as well when it comes to networking, open ports and stuff is just something my dad told me about :/

How about you and I look it up and come back here and post anyhting we learn (that seems useful)? I still have not looked up that open port thing.. and should actually look up why on earth I added a dongle if I have a built in network card somewhere...(besides it being easier for me to find in the directories...)

I hear or read,or my son says "partition" and I vaguely think I know ...

deal?

Deal?

Sorry my post was all over the place.  Just had an idea of you looking up netowrking and open ports and stuff and me also (making sure) I did and that we might come back to your thread here and compare notes (so to speak). That is what I meant by "deal?"

nvm if you don't want to.. just that if you said you would, then I would (as opposed to how I keep meaning to)

did not mean to tangent or anything Smile

RE: The fun with dummy Network Cards

it's a deal Tongue It would be quite useful if we posted what we've learned new about computers on this thread.
