OtherOS++ brings Linux back to the PS3, taunts Sony
By Terrence O'Brien posted May 6th 2011 11:15AM
Linux returns to PS3Mourn no more PS3 owners: what Sony hath taken away, the hacker community has given right back. The team at Gitbrew.org have returned Linux to the Cell-based gaming console with OtherOS++, which boasts a number of benefits over Sony's official stab at supporting other operating systems. For one, Linux is no longer relegated to a performance-degrading virtual machine and has full access to the PS3 hardware, and two, it works on both old-school "fat" models and the newer "slim" ones. We warn you, though -- this install is not for the faint of heart, and some older models that use NAND flash instead of VFLASH aren't compatible (check against this list). If you're undeterred, hit up the source link for downloads, instructions, and (most importantly) to stick it to the man.

Ancient news by this point.

You do need a bit of hardware messing around to make it work though.

RE: OtherOS++ brings Linux back to the PS3, taunts Sony

I gave up on OtherOS - it's a dieing platform thanks to Sony murdering it Sad

I don't want to invest time in a platform where I can't get replacement hardware easily and which has no future.

Dare one wildly assume Sony'll do the same to any alternatives like that, then? Sorry & all but if that's their demonstrated approach, by now, I think I'd come to that conclusion. The only way to change things there would be to convince Sony or get a court judgement about the matter, then?

RE: OtherOS++ brings Linux back to the PS3, taunts Sony

I for one can't trust sony to advertise features and not later remove them.
Let's look at the PS3 as originally envisioned:

Full PS1+PS2 backwards compatibility - slowly degraded and finally dropped in later models except for PS1 via software emulation
SACD support - dropped, for reasons unknown
Full region-free - only for PS3 bluray games, not for PS1+PS2 games, the playstation network, videos, DVDs, movie blurays......
Native compactflash+SD support - dropped from later models
OtherOS - dropped first from the slim models, sony publically promised not to drop it from the fat models, and then removed it with a firmware update due to paranoia over the geohot hack (which requires opening your PS3 up physically and only grants you some R/W access to all the hardware from inside linux - not piracy of games, personally I never bothered)
USB support for third-party accessories - dropped, due to paranoia over the exploit (and not actually fixing it anyway)
Dashboard - dropped, and I doubt anyone who doesn't own a japanese import even knows wtf i'm talking about
Java homebrew via bluray - seriously sony, who did this harm? dropped, yet it's still trivial to watch pirated DVDs or blurays without any hacks whatsoever
Free multiplayer - dropped, if you want to keep the original features listed above
Ability to play PS3 games - should be obvious, but dropped for newer titles unless you want to lose all of the above (the update removes all the above features)
Ability to redownload purchased movies from the playstation store - dropped if your hardware ever fails or you don't want to update it, in which case bye-bye movies - pirating them is more reliable and trying to keep the movies after they say no despite having paid for them is just as illegal - http://xkcd.com/488/

I still enjoy the games, but I honestly feel guilty for buying any when it supports assholes like Sony - the actual devs however should not be punished.

Then, it'd be a law court? Don't see any other options for it!

To my knowledge, a class action lawsuit is still ongoing - these things are slow

Glad it is happening, then! Yeah, those things take forever, sadly.
