Being a (self-identified) "sociopath" and yet having a pesky conscience

I like being a sociopath. I don't have to have some unnatural regard for my own existence and well-being that was really never there to begin with.

The problem is, I have become so good at ignoring my conscience, that I act on it without realizing. Meaning... I carefully weigh the pros of cons before hurting someone.

At the same time... I believe in Lex Talionis. This is better known in common English as "eye for an eye" law.

It works, believe it or not. If a person is willing to risk harm to themselves while invading your house, they aren't really concerned about continued living. What does one do in such a situation?

That isn't my main question. My main question is destroying that conscience... forever*. Suicide isn't an option. Killing people isn't an option. Destroying my future... isn't an option.

(*A la "boot on a human face... forever!", from 1984.)

I mean, it obviously has something to do with the anterior prefrontal cortex, some how.

I'm pondering... what part of me could I cede back into the nitrogen and carbon cycles so I wouldn't have to think about moral questions ever again?

I would be better off, that way.

You are not a sociopath. You appear to have some traits. DTX - now there's a sociopath. Kappers... not so much.

I wish I had some traits. I wish I was good at lying. I wish I could manipulate people (could come in handy sometimes). I certainly wish that I had superficial charm (it would sure beat what I have now: none whatsoever).

I have charm, too, and no one would consider me to be a sociopath. Although, my charm isn't superficial.

Uhhh... guys... tune down the pesky appeals to self-pity, please.

Turns my stomach. (my mother is frequently self-pitying, and to me... she's disgusting.)

Kapkao - have I been rubbing off on you in all the wrong ways?
You can believe in Lex Talionis (and you should if you're a sane human being) without wanting to switch off your conscience.

nope. I used LT as an example of a useful moral code that goes against the norm.

I might... feel better and enjoy life more if my moral conscience was nonexistent.

You wanna get inside my head?

I can't sleep because last month I destroyed my *** prefab HP Media Center comp by disabling all bios settings in a fit of panic. It's the middle of winter. THERE'S NOTHING TO **** DO EXCEPT PLAY ON Dad's COMPUTER! HOLY MOTHER OF SHITSTORM JONES THIS SUCKS.

Anticipatory reaction, is all.

I find it odd to want to switch off your conscience if you TRULY believe in lex talionis - witnessing a criminal getting away with their crimes should irritate you. At the same time, if you yourself engage in criminal activity you should expect reprisal for it in line with what you do - your conscience will bother you otherwise.

It's essentially justice in a very pure form, turning off that inner voice that says "you're doing something wrong here, you deserve bad stuff for it" leads you to place yourself above all justice.

I never have nothing to do.  If worse comes to worst, I'll get out the vacuum and go to war against the dust bunnies breeding under my bed.
