My husband is far more of a softie than I am.  Because he is tall, black and muscular people tend to be polite around him, because he is physically intimidating, even though he is a real pussy cat.  

I, on the other hand, learned that there are two things a small, physically weak female of the species can do.  The first is to be really really social and only go out in groups of other girls, which is safety in numbers.  

Since that option was closed to me, I instead went with option two, which is a female version of the classic "small man's push", which is to be wary of everybody and if forced to it, able to fight dirty.  I learned early that if push comes to shove, make sure you shove back HARD.  It got me a reputation of being crazy at school and a bit dangerous.  But at least I survived school.

That was me at school exactly.  I'm too easily imtimidated to reason with bullies so I go straight to "nutty cow" mode, lots of shouting, waving of arms. I decided if I was gonna get hurt then the bully's going to go home with a bloody nose too. I got the reputation of being too unpredictable to be a fun target. What sealed it was my class bully repeatedly trying to cut off my hair in a math lesson, I turned round and stuck his compass straight through the back of his hand. He cried like the baby he was and his rep as school bully extraordinaire was blown.




When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple with a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves and satin candles, and say we've no money for butter.I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells and run my stick along the public railings and make up for the sobriety of my youth.I shall go out in my slippers in the rain and pick the flowers in other people's gardens. And learn to spit...
