I really do think it's a good idea.  Tai kwondo is good for defensive moves, blocking, parrying, and so on.  While karate uses the opponent's momentum against them.  You could probably look around the area you're in for the best value for money for what you want.

I really recommend Karate (only because it's the only one I know anything about Smile )

It changed my son from a withdrawn frightened young teenager into a confident, happy young man.
He never had to use it as a defense because it changed his very demeanour and gave him a "presence" (not threatening, just confident) that meant he was simply left alone.
