Annoying NT habits

This is mostly just a vent about the people I live with.

- They think it's okay to phone at 3:57 am and keep phoning nearly every five minutes after that until 5:05 am.

- They think it's okay to come downstairs into the living room and put on The Sound of Music on the TV at a very high volume when they can see I am already trying to watch a cartoon on my laptop, and when they could just watch that film on their own laptop in their own bedroom.

- They think it's okay to leave bits of their food all over the house and to not clean up the plates and pans they use so that I can't even get at the sink to make one of their dirty plates clean so I can use it without having to touch all the rest of their dirty stuff.

- They think it's okay to shout angrily down the phone while I'm trying to sleep in the same room.

- They think it's okay to turn off the entire central heating because they're too warm, instead of just the turning off the radiator in their room or opening the window in the room or wearing less clothes, even though they know I'm hypersensitive to cold (I start to shiver at about 20 Celsius).

- They think it's okay to go crazy working out and exercising in the living room while I'm trying to sleep there.

- They think it's okay to ask me all the questions they have, just because I know a lot of facts, even when I'm obviously studying.

- They think it's okay to buy expensive food and useless items that they can't afford, and then to stress me out by not paying bills on time.

- They think it's okay to forget to pay a bill, and then when I find a letter in the post saying that our collective failure to pay the requested amount on time means that they're giving us a bad credit report, they think it'll all be fine if they just pay the bill in three days' time.

I hate them. But I can't move out, because this house is one of the best in the area and also one of the cheapest. What makes them think that acting like this is okay?! Grrr. Sad

I'm guessing students? This is why I don't live in halls.

Lawl yeah. I would opine that the supposed empathy of NTs can occasionally be more accurately described as consensus on allowing people to act like t***s

I was just going to say, that must be that "empathy" thing we keep hearing about.

Screw empathy. All that's needed to avoid things like this is for everyone to have a bit of grace. Will never happen of course.

Yeah, students. I used to live in halls but now I moved into a house with these people who are on my course, and I'm kind of regretting it. At least in halls I wasn't expected to be friendly to anyone because none of them were on my course...

@Gedrene: That is so true.

RE: Annoying NT habits

This reminds me a lot of my family. I think NTs lack empathy more than autistics do. People act like if something doesn't affect them personally, it doesn't matter at all.

If they take my hand, will it be to burn me or to say amen?

I disagree. I don't think empathy has anything to do with autism one way or the other. Like any other feeling or emotion, we display it differently. I think it's more that some people have more or less empathy than others.

Does anyone know why they laugh when somebody hurts themself?  That's always been one I haven't been able to work out.

A lot of NT life seems to involve metaphorically stepping on others in order to gain social status, get promoted at work etc.
How I think they see it subconsciously:
If you make others look bad then comparatively you look better than you are (It's a kind of deception).
Someone making a mistake or getting hurt makes that person look clumsy or stupid which is bad so it's like them doing it for you.
They enjoy the free gain in status from other people's downfall.

RE: Annoying NT habits

Detailed critical and logical analysis of surroundings and events is apparently not a particularly NT trait.
They don't think about things so much as react mindlessly like animals so it would be a very primitive, low level part of the mind which is responsible for such weird humour.
And before I invite too many flames from every NT on the site I should probably shut up now.

...or perhaps they do it because it's expected; I do things just because they're expected.

RE: Annoying NT habits

For me, it depends on how they did it and how serious it was. If they hurt themselves by doing something that was especially stupid, that can be funny, but only if they can walk away from it with no problems.
