new track- please listen, advice needed

http://soundcloud.com/nialllovatt/alpha-v2-unmastered

this is a new mix of a song i originally uploaded several months ago, now done through proper monitor speakers rather than headphones. as the title said, it hasn't yet been mastered. i'd really appreciate any opinions/advice on the mix and the sound of it, because i'm using it for a major university project involving making a music video, and whilst the sound isn't the biggest concern marks wise, it's important to me that the overall finished article is professional as possible, not least as it will be presented to the class.

so yeah if people could please have a listen and give their thoughts, even if it's not perhaps the kind of music you'd normally listen to (guess i'd describe it as progressive/ambient rock) then i would much appreciate it, even if it's just to say you really like it/hate it. though constructive criticism would be much more helpful, such as, this part is too loud or that part is too quiet.

thanks!

I love it and I don't know how you could make it better because I don't know anything about making music. I wish I could be of more help.

i like it.  maybe add a faster/more lively section somewhere, without being too fast and lively to keep the mood of the tune, you know for contrast?

You remind me a little of Brian Molko.
I love the song nialll.

When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple with a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves and satin candles, and say we've no money for butter.I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells and run my stick along the public railings and make up for the sobriety of my youth.I shall go out in my slippers in the rain and pick the flowers in other people's gardens. And learn to spit...

He sounded exactly like Brian Molko singing one of his songs.

RE: new track- please listen, advice needed

since you asked ...I have a lot to say about it - the beginning is not nearly as good as like 1.40 on.... around 3.00 works really well...  in the beginning I can't undertand the first words you say at about 34 seconds in and the tempo of the words all mushed together (not matching the music perhaps on purpose? too much dischord ) there make it sound really down/sluggish.  I think if you want to give a teaser - or say something then a couple of words that give a hint... (that can be understood) and then a few more

and then keep the song the same ...
like I said around 3 minutes it is very cool...

I like it. (hard to get past the 30 seconds to 1 minute though....for me anyway)

to be clear (the sound of your voice is not clear enough early on - too covered up by music so that is why I don't know why you bother to sing in the beginning if no one can understand - like zap said maybe more lively ( in the beginning? if the words are clearer the tempo could seem lively, not necessarily the mood ... like a thesis statement eh?)

Great potential - thanks for sharing (and you asked LOL!)

RE: new track- please listen, advice needed

first off thanks everyone!
addressing what windy said, perhaps the vocals weren't high enough in the mix, probably something i'll look at tomorrow as it's getting late to be having my speakers on loud. it's sort of meant to sound quite sluggish at first, and pick up pace as the song goes on, up til the part at the end where it gets big and heavy. i'm always a bit wary of putting the vocals too high in the mix, i think partly out of shyness and partly the influence of certain atmospheric-heavy bands like scarling and isis where the words are basically unintelligable without the having the lyric sheet to hand.

i hate putting my lyrics out there but if people think it would be very helpful in criticising the sound, i may put some on here, don't know yet. but i'll go back over it tomorrow (i may well end up releasing new mixes of other songs on there too, might put them up here as well if i'm pleased with any of them) and see what i can do about your comments. things seem to be at least generally positive which is encouraging.

oh and if any one else wants to have a listen and put their opinions forward then please do!! even if it's just to agree with someone else or say i like it/i don't like it then that's still very helpful to me.

ENjoyed this a lot. I didn't think the dischord (as someone said) is a problem at all, I loved that the sounds bled into one another, as did the vocal, I loved the atmospher, the bleakmultilayering and meloncholly.
