Do you think I have Aspergers?
Hello there. I'm a fifteen years old girl. I feel a bit awkward posting something like this, as you people on this forum probably get this question every day. But do you think I could have Aspergers? I feel like a total jerk asking this, but I felt it might be benifical for me to ask. The main reason why I started my suspicions are because my brother told me I remind him of a high functioning Aspie he knows. I started reading about Aspergers and it sounds like I have it. Not too sure though.
Anyways, the reason(s) why I suspect that I have Aspergers are that people are constantly saying that I must have Aspergers. A friend of mine who has a best friend who is a diagnosed Aspie has often said I have many of the symptoms. Of course it doesn't mean I have it. But another reason is that I have terrible, terrible social skills. I've been diagnosed with severe social phobia, I get extremely nervous around people and I avoid talking to them. And when I start talking to people, the conversation often end up being one sided as I start blabbering about my interests.
Another one is that when I get obsessed with something, I can't stop talking about it. My friends have often complained to me about this. I can go on for months about an obsession, I notice people rolling their eyes and getting angry at me. Of course I'm not saying that obsessive people must have Aspergers, but I noticed that one of the listed symptoms are obsessions like this. I could be wrong, though.
I also have trouble understanding facial expressions and tone. I can definitely sense them, but I'm not always sure what they mean. I'm completely blind to body language though, I didn't even know people show their emotions by using body language until someone mentioned it. But I've also heard that you have to learn the signs in order to understand them.
Another one is that I take everything so literally. When people say something when they obviously don't mean it, I tend to think they're serious. I even remember when a boy in my school asked me to hand him a box that was right in front of him. I obeyed, suddenly everyone started laughing at me. “You don't have to take everything so literally!” I was so embarrassed.
I also have very senstive hearing, I often complain about the audio being too high, but people say it's fine. My ears are very sensitive.
But a girl in my school has Aspergers, diagnosed. I talk to her everyday, she seems like a pretty normal person to me but other people say she's a bit weird. They say the same about me, I'm described as the mysterious, weird freak in my class.
Anyways, these are just my thoughts. I don't know if I have or do not have Aspergers. But I've been in a denial about it for a while. Sorry if I'm wrong about something, but please tell me what you think. It would be appreciated.
EDIT: Err, sorry wrong catagory :/

RE: Do you think I have Aspergers?
Maybe, we couldn't tell you either way. The things to think about are whether you have the more neurological symptoms. Do you have sleep problems? Synaesthesia? Language delay when you were young? Stims?
Either way, it doesn't really matter- you are the same person you always were, how other people choose to describe the way you think is kind of irrelevant.
Welcome to AFF.

That rings a bell with me - I've also tended to have friends who seem normal to me but weird to most other people.
Do you also tend to get along better with people older/younger than yourself than you do with people in your own age group?
Welcome to AFF. You can go down one of two paths - you can hang around the forums and ask a few questions and eventually decide for yourself whether you probably have aspergers syndrome or not. Or you can seek a professional diagnosis. Professional diagnosis has some downsides, and is best sought only if you have a specific need for it.

It certainly sounds like you may be. I'm Aspie, as is my daughter, and your description sounds like you're a perfectly normal, well-adjusted Aspie girl.
Welcome to the site, btw! It's nice to meet you.

That's an interesting point, who here has synaesthesia? I'd be interested to see if it's more of a dominant Autistic trait than it is in NTs, or if it occurs amongst us as the same rate in NTs.
Back to the topic, and another thing you may like to look at is immune problems. A lot of us suffer from stomach cramps, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, etc. (My daughter has that, but I've instead got Hashimoto's and a so-far mild version of Lupus.) It seems that we have immune systems that tend to overreact.
Do you find flickering flourescent lights distracting/painful? Does sunlight burns you easily? Do you find that you need to take lots of "time out" to yourself to calm down from stressful situations?
Those are a few things that may help you to self-diagnose.

The link with autism:
http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn16...rthed.html
Also:
Autism and epilepsy occur with synesthesia more often than chance predicts. Daniel Tammet, the savant who set a European record for reciting the digits of pi, has all three conditions indicating that they might share an underlying genetic cause. Synesthesia has so far been linked to a region on chromosome 2 that is associated with autism and epilepsy.[45]

Alison makes some other good points. Being on the spectrum might mean that you find things like flickering lights or annoying noises very distracting and difficult to "tune out". You are also likely to need a little more "alone time" than most people.
I guess Aspiegrrrl might have a few more insights on being a 15-year-old girl with aspergers than I ever could.

This scared me. What are the downsides?

Why is it that the best ones that ask these questions just leave one thread and never return?

I'm not sure if I have synesthesia... because it isn't like I see rainbows every time i read, but if you give me a letter, or a number I can tell you what colors they are:
for example:
W - a beige-orangish color
L- creamy yellow
Y- pinkish
A- red
D- brown
etc....
and:
2- red
3- yellow
7- orange
4- purple
etc...
Also, with music notes I could tell you their colors somewhat, with higher notes tending to be lighter, and some melodies feel very "colorful".
A friend- who was taking design classes- saw a painting I did and told me I had an intuition for color matching/opposites (example: purple with orange; or green with purple; or red with yellow).
And I always liked the color purplish-greenish-blue, or sea blue or whatever its called because it always made me feel a certain way- really good.
I figured I might have a touch of synesthesia, but there was a picture in a textbook about it (in 8th grade) where a person was looking at their wrist-watch and all the numbers were supposedly jumping out in different colors. I dont see stuff like that so i figured I didn't have it exactly. Do other ppl see stuff like that?

or example, sound-color synesthetes, as a group, tend to see lighter colors for higher sounds[22] and grapheme-color synesthetes, as a group, share significant preferences for the color of each letter (e.g., A tends to be red; O tends to be white or black; S tends to be yellow etc.,[21][23][24])
omg i just read that=
EXACTLY TRUE!!!!

I was just going to ask if you wanted this moved. I'll do that in a second.
Welcome to AFF. The impression I get is that you seem to have quite a few aspie traits.

It looks like this thread is old...october 2011... if its not- sorry for the imposing synesthesia post.
