As an example, if a child has an immune form of autism, it may be that what we want to do is manipulate their immune system rather than trying something else that may be related to synaptic functions in the brain.
What the hell is this crap? An immune form of autism? What? Is he speaking in metaphors or is he a scientist from a 50s sci fi B-movie? What the hell?
Some people just need a high-five.
In the face.
With a chair.

Oh, the horror and the tragedy! Those two happy, smiling children in the photo, having fun with their father...have AUTISM!!! They must be cured, try knocking out their immune systems. They may have to live in an anti-bacterial bubble for the rest of their lives, but at least they'll be able to talk to NTs. LOL
I particularly liked the bit about our brains being "too big". Wow, backhanded compliment, or what?

RE: Two genes associated with autism have been located...
What kills me, is that these articles are always written with such a chipper and helpful tone. No one reading this, who isn't otherwise informed, would ever know the difference.
Check out my Facebook page for links to my featured column on WrongPlanet, my blog for "In Their Own Words," magazine articles, etc...

FUC*!! BOLLUX!! SON-OF-A BITC*!! SHI*!!
Several of the many swear words I'm using right now.
On Facebook, 4,151 people [so-far] recommend the page. That increased my anger and caused me to swear even more. Anyway, the bastar* that wrote this should be shot. Out of a cannon, into shark infested waters, on the sun.
Look, this page is a bunch of bullshi*. To sum up in one sentence. God know how many drug the guy who wrote this took.

RE: Two genes associated with autism have been located...
It makes sense that there are more than one subtype or distinct autism syndrome. And likely also genetically unrelated syndromes that present with an autism phenotype. Rett syndrome being an obvious instance of this, with a known single-gene cause, a mutation in the gene coding for the MECP2 protein. And at the same time, alteration in one gene, can result in multiple different conditions. Rett syndrome again is a great example of this, with different results stemming from differing dosage expression and distribution of the altered protein.
Again with the comparisons to cancer.

In our darkness we can see
So with others blindness
We take flight.

It doesn't say to knock our their immune systems; it says to manipulate their immune systems. Whatever that's supposed to mean.
The article speaks in such broad generalities that it leaves one to wonder exactly what the study did find.

"Whatever that's supposed to mean?" Then why can't it mean to knock out their immune systems? With the immune system, there's really only a couple of options open to science as it stands now: to use immuno-suppressive drugs or to irradiate the system. Both of which have the same effect, in that the immune system stops operating. If any members know of any other options, I'd love to hear of them, particularly since I've been suffering the double whammy of Lupus and Hashimoto's for years, I'd be pleased to hear of a treatment, short of eradication, that could soothe an over-active immune system.
