Autism Speaks contacted me on Facebook...

So I wrote this on my wall on Facebook, as well as on a lot of the Autism Speaks groups and pages:

Quote:
Autism Speaks are raising tons of money for a genetic test so that we can be aborted before we're born. Even if that is not their reason for the genetic test, that is what will happen. They also don't let autistics speak for themselves, and claim to speak for autistics even tho they are NT, but they will not let autistics speak for other autistics, saying we can't speak for them. They also say kids will be a certain way forever and need tons of abusive treatment to be "saved", when 1) the treatment is abusive and 2) many of them grow upo to be high functioning with no help at all as a child.

Check out my wall: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1081291661 , maybe help me out with this convo and with the ones on the Autism Speaks walls?

Genocide is defined as "any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial, social, political, economic, intellectual, familial, genetic, or religious group, as such: killing members of the group; causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; [and] forcibly transferring children of the group to another group."

I had to ask my daughter what these "walls" were, as I assumed you didn't mean the ones that hold roofs up, LOL.

Hi Anastassia. We're all for free speech and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but please stop posting the same message over and over again on the various Autism Speaks Facebook pages. What you're posting is simply not correct. We'd be more than happy to talk with you to let you know what we're really all about though: just let us know.

Hee hee, why don't we all go paint their walls with the same message, and different names!  I haven't got Facebook, but if I did, I'd certainly spam their little behinds!

really don't think spamming is the way forward, people are more likely to think you're crazy and thus ignore you irrespective of your message. plus blocking people who spam on facebook is not exactly hard. maybe you should have a discussion with whoever contacted you though. try and convince them of your point of you, and so on.

I wouldn't risk it. They can just report you to to Facebook and close your account. Then you would have to start all over and re add everyone and photos. Just hope you have back up then like all your photos saved and all your friends written down so you remember who you had on there.

RE: Autism Speaks contacted me on Facebook...

Well they're hardly listening to us now, are they?  Perhaps not spam, but if all of us got together with a concerted message and let them know that we can think and speak very well by ourselves and don't need them at all.  But then, as I said, I don't have a Facebook thingy.

And, oh yes, what is a "schizo", please?  Is it a type of flying fox, which is my avatar?  Or are you referring to what I've actually said, and there is no actual "look" involved?  I've been called a lot of things in my time, but I think this may be a new one.  If I'm going to be accused of looking like something, I'd like to know what it is first.  Plus, if it's meant to be insulting, don't say "sorry, but..."  You either should just say it, or not.  There is no "sorry, but..."  That's always annoyed me.

If someone says, "I'm sorry but ... whatever" then I take that to mean that they generally hold you in good regard/high esteem, but on this particular occasion they think you are ...whatever.

The reason it annoys me is that it's usually used just before somebody attempts to pick myself and my life apart with a pair of plyers and a hammer, metaphorically speaking, yet I'm supposed to overlook the insult because they say they are "sorry" about it.  I'd sooner they just come up to me if they have a problem rather than pussyfoot around it with polite circumlocutions.

No, the comment was meant as an insult and I took it as such.  It wasn't even a particularly clever insult, and was as insulting to those of us on this site who may genuinely have schizophrenia.  Maybe the poster would like to also poke fun at diabetics, for instance?  For the record, I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and Lupus.  The poster can have some fun with those if he wants to be insulting!

I generally try not to get upset when NTs use schiz as an insult (they normally dont know any better) but for it to be used as such here, then yes it upsets me. I still struggle to see myself as AS, I've spent so many years as a schizophrenic. It feels like wearing a new pair of shoes that haven't bedded in yet. It was hard growing up with that label, really hard. Much of my younger years were spent being the "weird schizo" at school. I dont appreciate it being banded about casually as a piss take of someone.
