I have to strongly disagree with this premise as it relates to American life.  Most middle class people or relatively well-to-do do not have servants; especially household servants.  Some may pay fro outside help for domestic things because of demanding careers and upkeep of large houses (including my brothers).  Personally I'd be uncomfortable relying on employee(s) of an outside agency to keep my place kept while I was at work.  Some help recently broke my brother's master bathroom faucet due to negligence.  Relying on this kind of help to this degree is a current generational phenomenon in America.  (In times past, it would only be the likes of the Rockefellers or Vanderbuilts to have to rely on outside, employed domestic help).

Contrast this to the Philippines.  Most families to some degree or another rely on outside domestic help; often having live-in domestic help.  Having servants is a status symbol.  To grasp this sort of thing would first be a culture shock to an American.  Most Filipinos dream of being rich.  Part of this dream of being rich means having servants.  With my second ex-wife, it would get back to me that there was "something wrong" with me or that it was "nonsense" because I was American and didn't have any domestic servants.  (After all, by virtue of being American, I was supposed to be "rich").  My second ex-wife's own sister (back in the Philippines) scorned at me about it being ridiculous that I didn't have domestic help.  (She came from a household that had one or more live-in domestic servants to cook meals, etc., and a live-in security guard).
