Undisclosed Moderation on other Online Communities
Shameless edit past 5 minutes: This is not intended to suggest that AFF use these measures.
In the following link there are descriptions of “hellbanning,” “slowbanning” and “errorbanning,” which are lesser known ways to moderate online communities.
As far as I know, these are not used on AFF and the underlying software, MyBB, doesn’t appear to provide facilities for them. I doubt they would be appropriate for AFF either unless perhaps for clearly deliberate trolls. Though I do think it is relevant as many here have said that they were banned from other online communities.

...I think this was meant to be in the Moderator Discussion, not General.

I placed it here because I think it is relevant to people who are potentially subject to these measures.

It is sad if I can’t openly discuss this, which was not intended to suggest that AFF use these methods, because I have become a moderator.

RE: Undisclosed Moderation on other Online Communities
You will be accepted well, if you moderate, are fair, and not overbearing as we have all seen on other boards.
Too bad there is not a training program for admin/mods. I realise it would have to be different on all board.
We as Aspies would probably not respond well to such drastic measures as described in the OP.
We accept Gareth`s role as the board owner, admin. and rightful maker of the rules. That is only right. We accept Pikajedi3`s role as admin.
I think everyone expects a mod to just moderate and not lord any of their personal beliefs over us.
When a mod becomes tyrannical that scares everyone and generally makes a mess of the board. Witness WP.
Just opinion, tho.

RE: Undisclosed Moderation on other Online Communities
The burden of neutrality is the main reason I would not want to become a moderator.
Also, in debates one has to wonder if people are not disagreeing with you because they think you are right, or because they worry that you might be one of those moderators who uses his/her position to enforce his/her opinions. I would refuse to participate in any forum that permits that style of moderating - hence why I have always given WP a wide berth.

Somethings are best left to be discovered on your own, we all go through steps into transition. It takes time.

The hellbanning is weird.
I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it will be with a knife.

If I offended you, please let me know via pm. I tend to do it without realizing it. I can be clueless as to how my humor comes across. Please be nice about it.

RE: Undisclosed Moderation on other Online Communities
I am of the opinion that those sorts of things either should not be used, or should be used only as a very last resort, in the case that multiple warnings have been issued, bans have been slapped down, and the user targeted with such a stealth-ban is a serial ban-evader that just keeps coming back, and back, and back to cause grief. DTX type shenanigans, for instance.
Although preferably strangling that little bugger with his mouse cord would be much nicer
Even then I am not a fan of the idea, moderation should be 100% open as to what and why something is being done, even if there is no democratic process about things. What is done, needs seeing to be done. (almost always, and in the cases extreme action is necessary, it still leaves a nasty taste in my mouth)

I think hellbanning is an excellent idea. But only to use on a serial ban evader who comes back repeatedly to stir up trouble, attempts to hide his/her identity, and so on.
