RE: Torture the poster above you
Emotional torture? oh I tried that when duckface started the thread, gareth threw a hissyfit though and ghosted the entire post.
Guess he doesn't have the stomach for pics of flesh eating screw worm fly maggots, parasitic worms in the eyeballs or harlequin fetus babies with blood clots for eyeballs :p
*locks aspiegrrl up in a coffin, with an air supply, and an intravenous nutrient drip, buries alive, and leaves, only returning once every while to change the air supply and feeding tube*
I have actually often wondered, how long a person could be forcibly kept alive, if suitably restrained, perhaps with a paralyzing drug such as curare, with artificial means, gastric feeding tube etc, and hydration, in a buried coffin, if one changed the air supply and food over every now and then.
Would be quite fun to find out where a paedophile lives locally, and try it out. I bet they would literally lose their mind after a couple of years, and be reduced to something psychologically close to a baked potato.

When I worked in a lab, we came across a journal article that studied the lab rats. They're generally kept in the smallest possible cages, given food and water, and occasionaly a clean cage. They seldom see others, they're generally in isolation. The purpose of the study was to see if these conditions caused mental problems that would invalidate psychological studies.
The lab rats all quickly go insane.
After that, I made a point of lovin on the rats when I got a chance!

Don't worry, they'll give you some tylenol after that stereotaxic surgery!

RE: Torture the poster above you
I HATE what those fuckups do to lab rats, it is beyond disgusting. As a scientist myself, and pharmacologist, that is the main thing that keeps me determined to go freelance. I flatly refuse to subject a living animal to that sort of treatment, I would gladly use rapists, paedophiles, mendacious, grasping politicians and religious fundies for such testing, but unfortunately, society, for some reason, seems to frown on destructive testing on even the most base and disgusting humanoid beings. Makes me feel physically sick, when I read a journal article for some of my research, and see how they starve animals, deliberately make them swim to the point of drowning to test antidepressants, forcibly feed small animals opiates, until they are dependent, and then abruptly withdraw them, and use some of the most hideously unpleasant convulsants, neurotoxins and panicogens as a baseline for testing motivation, cognitive enhancers, alzheimer's research, or antianxiety drugs. Every time I take the sleep aid I sometimes do, I always stop to think what some animals have had to go through for me to do so. And just recently, while giving myself a thorough grounding in scorpion toxicology and treatment prior to getting a highly venomous species as a pet, whilst familiarizing myself with the mode of action of the multiple toxic peptides present in the venom, I read how they injected it into mice, just to see how much it took to kill the poor bas7ards, and how they left them to suffer miserably until it worked its way out of their system, or killed them. Then killed the survivors anyway.
I cannot stop it, but I will not be a part of it, I am trying to start my own chemical supply company dealing with neurochemical research ligands, grey-market psychotropic substances, general purpose lab supplies and plant/animal toxins/venoms etc, and I will be making sure top of the list on the end-user disclaimer, before one can purchase any of my products, will be a statement that nothing I produce or sell is to go into any animal, bacteria, viruses, cell lines, cultured tissue and nematode worms are one thing. But subjecting insects, or rats, monkeys, no, no and f**k your grandmother with a pointy stick no, not with anything bought from my company (and I will be trawling the literature looking)
Every time I read one of those studies, it makes me want to whip out a bowie knife dripping with bleach and remove a researcher's face, from the bottom of the neck, all the way through encompassing the hair and facial features, lock the prick in a bare, unfurnished tiny cage, and leave them to die slowly of loneliness. With nothing but water, and food pellets that supply a mixture of enough carbohydrate, protein, electrolytes and trace elements to keep them from reaching death (note: not keep them alive, there is a difference)
It isn't even as if much of such testing serves a purpose, it wouldn't make it any less right if it did, but rats, mice and invertebrates have very different metabolism and biochemistry, and knowing how much of substance X kills a rat, or YZ turns a cat into a brain-dead vegetable tells you exactly that, how much of ABC is sufficient to maim or kill animal XYZ. Look at that disastrous buggerup of that prototype immunostimulant drug by Te Genero, they pulled a monoclonal antibody out of the hat that was directed against a T-cell surface receptor, and which acted as a potent superagonist, generically activating T-cells, the immune systems hunter-killer corps, tested it in monkeys, raised in sterile conditions, no problems there, tested it in a clinical trial with humans who actually have had to USE their immune system, in a manner of speaking, their immune system's shock troops were shooting live rounds, the dose was at a mere fraction of the dose tested in monkeys, which was hundreds of times greater, and within minutes it provoked a massive cytokine storm that ripped the trial participant's body to pieces from the inside out, guys blew up like a sausage full of pressurized sh!t and the experimental drug completely nuked their immune systems, almost totally wiping out their entire white cell count, and leaving them with a lovely mixture of cancer, degenerative autoimmune diseases and generally made a royal bloody buggerup of everything from nerves to connective tissue.
It is high time we abandoned lab animal testing, and put massive amounts of funding into developing complete panels of functional test beds for everything from immune systems, to pain expression and baby laxatives, no animals should have to go through that sort of crap. I eat meat, I would likely starve if I did not, since I cannot deal with veg, but I hate the way most animals are treated prior to becoming part of the food chain. Medical testing is something worse entirely though, not just mere killing, but systematic torture.

I meant torture like the Nightmare Maze. I posted the whole "Nightmare Maze" thing on a thread for book ideas in this forum. It's based on a nightmare I had.

Do tell, I don't think I read that thread.
Are you thinking something a bit edgar allen poe? or more freddy krueger?
*has momentary mental image of a big stuffed crow, stuck on a very pointy sharp fingernail, like a barbarian's head on a pike*
Hell if I know where THAT came from...
Or that movie...whats it called, there is a group of people, in a huge cube, divided into many rooms, some of them full of vicious boobytraps, some safe, guy starts testing by probing rooms with a boot, triggers a few traps, they think its a color code, but it isn't, guy goes into 'safe' room, promptly gets his eyes burnt out with a spray of acid in the face, and the next guy gets hit by a huge wire grid, mousetrap-style, and falls to the floor a second or so later in neatly cubed bits of long-pork (so to speak) scratchings...in the end the key turns out to be a fiendisly difficult mathematical calculation puzzle, which is only solved by an autistic savant guy, who in the end, gets out alive, with I think, one other of the people that got dropped into the cube thing...damn what the hell is that movie called...

RE: Torture the poster above you
I think there is a push to do less animal based research. For one thing, it isn't always relevant. Besides the fact that all the poor critters go insane, different species will react differently. What may be true for rats or zebra fish may not be true for people. It is also becoming more practical to grow cell cultures to test instead of using a whole animal.
Anyway...torture time! Bwa ha ha ha ha!
