Yeah, Wondered what people thought of it being officially announced, though. I'm not sure I see any advantages to them deciding Autism is genetic & there's certainly potential disadvantages, if they've identified enough genes.

"Autistic individuals"  as opposed to "healthy" people.

Great. Also means they can screen for it in pregnancy & eliminate it, though. Can't diseases & other disabilities be genetic?

Well, it was partly funded by Autism Squeaks, after all.

RE: Autism is genetic....

I refused that sort of testing during pregnancy.  Many women do.  Every pregnancy has risks, and every life is special.  Often, unless they do an amnio, the blood test is incorrect anyway.  I can't believe they still use it.  According to that test, my brother should've had down's syndrome, which he did not.

I know personally how heritable AS is!  My great-grandmother sounds like she had AS, my grandfather had AS traits, my mother has AS traits, me, and kiddo.  Yes, highly genetic!

Preaching, choir.

'nuff said.

RE: Autism is genetic....

Please take this with a grain of salt.  I agree that Asperger Syndrome is genetic.  The argument could be raised that natural eugenics is at work (a.k.a. Darwinism) that Asperger males are generally not attractive to the opposite sex.  It limits their mating opportunities; yet some are fortunate or unfortunate enough to breed ("fortunate" versus "unfortunate" implying the quality of union that the Aspie gets hitched to).

Hence the Asperger and autistic populations will always be limited and regarded as outsiders to the mainstream poplulation.  But such individuals serve a purpose for the overall population.  For the overall population to advance, Asperger minds at work will be a great collective asset.  One might ask "Where would civilization be if it weren't for Thomas Edison and his special interest in creating artificial light?"  We probably would have eventually had artificial light in standard use but likely substantially much later than the late 1800's.  Flourescent lighting was also being developed at the time.  Edison's (incadescent) lighting is now obsolete, but it paved the way for exploring other methods to acheive lighting.  One might ask "How many pioneers in other forms of lighting were Aspies?"

Thomas Edison is an example of one Aspie who forged; or was circumstancially given; the opportunity to "shine".  (I meant this as a fact but; being Edison; it can be a pun as well.)  Many Aspies never get such opportunities.  Such innovativeness or creativity is squelched in their formative years (school bullying being a most obvious force).

So I meant to say that in the human race; under the Darwinism premise; Aspies are meant to have a difficult existence but yet contain the minds that will be a significant force in advancing the human race.

And unnatractive?

My arse. Although I personally find HFA or classically autie women far more attractive, compared to aspies.

RE: Autism is genetic....

Perhaps it is our personalities that are not attractive. There are a lot of nice looking Aspies.
