(1) The theory I have read on that is that the pleasure centres in a sociopath's brain are wired differently. Combine that with an inability to feel genuine remorse, and you've got someone to be wary of. Which seems to make a lot of sense (although that doesn't make it correct).

(2) More than likely some of them were high-functioning sociopaths. Sociopaths commonly do very well in the corporate world.
