Being a leader
Well, now as the college has started , the admins asked us to pick a leader for the class , and it is compulsory to pick a smart one with good English accent beside of being nerve and be able to talk to the teachers.
the girls in my class think that '' I'M'' the best one to fit with leadership !!
I tried to refuse but they kept saying that I was a good choice and when I asked them why , they said that I was nerve and I was able to say what's in my mind which is basically will benefit the girls .
I'm so confused , I don't know what to do , do I have to accept or no ?
in my opinion the leader must be social and that's what I have a lack of , otherwise I feel like I can't speak with the teachers , if the contacting method were by writing instead of talking that would be convenient but as the same time I feel like I want to help the girls especially those who can't speak English very well .

RE: Being a leader
To be a leader, one must have followers. You seem to have those in abundance.
To be an effective leader, you need only determine where your followers want to go, and then lead them there. This seems to be what your followers expect.
To be a true leader, you must be able to convince your followers that your way is the best way. You seem to lack this talent.
I think that you're being rail-roaded into a position that nobody else wants. It may be that your "followers" think that you will do as they tell you, so that when the spit hits the spam, you will be blamed and not they.

RE: Being a leader
yes , you are right Fnord , I'm so obvious and that's why they think I'm good to be a leader but as you said if any wrong happened I'll be the one blamed , I'm trying to start a new attitude especially with teachers because I was rude with the previous ones and I don't know about the girls , I don't know how they determine that I'm the best all over the way , I'm afraid if they realized that I have my own problems because of being aspie , they would hurt me or something as what had happened for couples of years

RE: Being a leader
What does the role of class leader actually involve? Do you think it is something you could do?

Good english accent? Is that a criteria used to select leadership? What kind of school are you going to??
Anyway, class leaders usually don't have to do social stuff, they get time off classes and participate at boring meetings where people think they are making a "huge difference" for the whole school. It's not as if they are choosing you as their leader, in the way that you will actually be the social leader of the group.. it's a simple formality and it shouldn't scare you too much.

actually English is not our language , and all of the subjects are in English beside the teachers are non-Arab , thus, they need some one who can speak English with a good accent

RE: Being a leader
This touches a nerve, as I used to always fall in this trap in groups. If I didn't push enough for their interests to advance, they'd accuse me of not caring. If I pushed enough to make things move, the ones in power would get angry and my "followers", afraid of the authority, would end up blaming me. Then I'd end up being scapegoated by everyone involved.

RE: Being a leader
This reminds me of a short story I once read, about a class in which one of the pupils was a bookie's daughter who took bets on the outcome of the form captain election. One of her classmates hatched a scheme to rig the election so that the least popular girl (meaning longest odds) got elected. The teacher fell right for it, thinking what nice generous girls her pupils were to give the outsider a chance. Unfortunately the elected winner refused to take up the position!
As the player's breath warms the fipple the tone clears.
It is time to consider how Domenico Scarlatti
condensed so much music into so few bars
with never a crabbed turn or congested cadence,
never a boast or a see-here; and stars and lakes
echo him and the copse drums out his measure,
snow peaks are lifted up in moonlight and twilight
and the sun rises on an acknowledged land.
Basil Bunting, Briggflatts
