So many autistics suffered for years at the hands of mercury fanatics, those obsessed with the notion that mercury was the cause of autism. Suffering chelation, extreme diets, multiple daily injections and various other torturous attempts at curing mercury poisoning which simply did not exist.

Many other autistics suffered insults, ridicule, personal attacks and scorn for simply saying "I am not poisoned by mercury" and explaining the reality.

How many of us were attacked on blogs, banned from autism parent forums, and condemned when simply expressing an opinion online because we stuck to our beliefs that we were not poisoned.

I know autistics who had tissue samples taken against their will during their parents hopeless attempts to prove mercury was the cause of autism.

I shudder to think of the years of hell for the youngest, most vulnerable autistic children who had large amounts of blood taken for tests to prove needless mercury theories. At least one of these children died directly from the huge amounts of blood taken.

When Dr. Andrew Wakefield was finally discredited it still took time for the major pro-mercury theory organisations to really accept it.

For the real victims of the whole scam, the apology has never happened.

There has been no apology from the many organisations that badgered and ridiculed pro-autism orgs, no apology from the many doctors that profited hugely from desperate and ignorant curebie parents that dreamed of a 'normal' child hidden inside their 'poisoned' child.

No apology to the medically abused children, no apology at all.

This is an open invitation to the thousands upon thousands of people that believed in mercury poisoning so much that they harmed child and adult autistics either in words or actions in order to pursue their theories.

You may post here and offer an apology, autistics are still waiting.

Amy, if you can't tell who had this stuff done to them, can you tell in more detail the stuff done to them? It needs to be said.

Talking of mercury one of the research students rolled out that chestnut about mercury to my face the other day. I put them in their place real quick. They never even got to argue the case.

EDTA is very dangerous when used in the body as it can also chelate other metals such as iron, calcium, magnesium all which we need to survive. Strictly for heavy metal poisoning only. And then, still potentially dangerous.

The Wakefield/vaccine thing is separate from the mercury thing. I know the first one has been discredited. Has the mercury link been discredited?

The standard quack theory is that the vaccines contain mercury in the form of thimerosal.

They are very much linked, thankfully both are now discredited.

The problem is that there are still many who believe the Wakefield study. I think that study did a lot of damage that will take years to overcome. It's hard for anyone to accept the fact that they believed something that was revealed years later to be bogus.

Ignorant parents and medical "professionals" ALWAYS look for a scapegoat.  That must be the prime reason of the belief.

Andrew Wakefield is a quack and an evil monster. Here in the UK, even though his "report" was broadcast years ago, it has had a huge effect. Currently over the last three years the have been impending warnings from doctors of a measles epidemic because there are still parents out there who believe his vile theories and refuse to get their children vaccinated. Admissions for mumps, rubella and measles have gone up sharply, as has pregnant women getting the virus and consquently unborn babies getting major illness's and life changing physical defects from getting infected by it through the placenta.

I got my daughter vaccinated, because I would rather her be healthy than go blind/end up physically disabled/brain damaged from the blood poisoning and cerebral seizures that can come from having massive temperature and fever when having measles and not being protected from it.

I am constantly having to deal with people who are convinced that mercury is responsible for autism. It is pretty frustrating, even after I explain the facts, they will refuse to hear it, and continue their crusade based completely on unsubstantiated claims.

I think the problem is that it makes no sense at all to give babies so many shots at so small an age.

Not that it is mercury, not that it is anything other than babies get a fever - sometimes high - after certain shots - and after a fever people think their chiuld may have been damaged by high fever.

A child was perfect and flawless, healthy and then has a shot and has a fever and cries and has swelling.. some babies do get brain dange from reactiosn to vaccines.  THAT does not mean they have autism , but those babies will ALSO develop more slowly.

Some babies that react to vaccines - strongly - have more sensitive systems (which is a comorbid of autism) than other babies AND were gentically born autistic. The symptoms come out after the child has it's first STRESS/fever (etc., vaccine reaction)

It is the timing that has parents feeling like it is not irrational to think their is some correlation.

vaccines do not make austim.
vaccines do some times give children brain damage or death.(that is why there is the vaccine injury compensation program)
mercury is not linkied to autism
chelation has nothing to do with autism
tourettes sometiems first shows up the first time a kid has a fever or is given an antibiotic... does not mean the kid was given tourettes by the antibiotic does it?
