I was thinking about this for the last couple of days and wonder if we can come at the question from a slightly different angle: given that humans don't usually do something for nothing, I'd be interested to find out what is it about religion and belief in god that people feel are of positive benefit to them personally?  

If they would explain why they believe, and stay in a particular belief system, that could perhaps be a starting point of understanding between the atheists, agnostics (myself included), "casual" believers, and true believers.

The feeling I'm getting from reading the debate here is not just simplistic: "my parents and community believe in (a particular type of religion/god) so I do too", but seems to be defended far more vociferously than that, and I'd really like to hear the reasons behind each individual's belief system.
