"Having a bad day?"
"No."
"Well, turn that frown upside down!"
"I'm not frowning."
"You're not smiling."
"Why should I be smiling?"
"If you were happy, you'd be smiling."
"Whatever."

A friend of mine is just back from a holiday in the US and she commented on how people there smile all the time.  Obviously insincere smiles, but smiles all the same, all the time.  And they're always delighted to be of service, and say "have a nice day" and "your'e welcome!" when you say thank you.

My friend says she stopped saying thank you, because she got to the stage that if she heard another phony, "Your'e welcome!", she'd have screamed or hit someone.

That's why I like New York.  If a New Yorker smiles at you, you earned it.  The rest of the country hates New Yorkers because they think we're rude.  Nope - just honest.

Here they wonder what kind of weed the smiling person has been smoking.

RE: Awkward wedding experience

My NT ex-husband commented rudely that I wasn't "smiling" enough in the wedding photos, but then again, it was outdoors, late spring so it was hot, plus the strapless bra I wore with my dress was digging into my chest which was extremely uncomfortable.

This was before I was diagnosed, as I had divorced him a few years before the diagnosis, which was a good thing as he would have used it against me, especially if we had a child on the spectrum. Fortunately, I filed for divorce before I could have become pregnant, so I was able to cut him completely out of my life.

My boyfriend once said something about my not smiling, so in order to assure him that I cared, I came out as being Aspie to him. He was extremely understanding, as he had a learning disability as a child, but I think he has aspie traits. I've been with him for longer than I was with my ex-husband.

RE: Awkward wedding experience

I had the opposite experience last night, of sorts. I was at an Aspie women's group and feeling really bored, but the organiser assumed everyone had enjoyed themselves!

As the player's breath warms the fipple the tone clears.
It is time to consider how Domenico Scarlatti
condensed so much music into so few bars
with never a crabbed turn or congested cadence,
never a boast or a see-here; and stars and lakes
echo him and the copse drums out his measure,
snow peaks are lifted up in moonlight and twilight
and the sun rises on an acknowledged land.

Who said you're happy?  Not being sad does not automatically translate to being happy.  Yeesh.  I have an idea, instead of telling me to smile, why don't you do something to cheer me up? (And I'm contradictory by nature--telling me to smile will assuredly make me want to frown just to bug you.)
