It seemed to me that there was a bit more going on in the family than just Rain Man having autistic savantism. His brother and father also showed signs of autism - possibly HFA or Aspergers. They both seemed hyperfocused on certain subjects and had difficulties in expressing emotions. It's easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission.
