RE: What Jobs Do Other Aspies Do?

I have a degree in maths with music but I had a lot of trouble getting a job.  I then trained as a teacher and qualified and still couldn't get a job at above minimum wage because I turn into a gibbering idiot at interviews.  I finally got a job in a college (they were desperate).  I love teaching and I'm good at it but yes it's hard.

I just get refused even for minimum wage jobs.
Is this normal for Aspies?

Yes.  It seems ominously normal.  It fits my own experience, sadly enough!

"A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty." (Albert Einstein)

This is too scary.  Your experiences are like mine.

Perhaps having our own country might not be a bad idea....

How would that help?

As the player's breath warms the fipple the tone clears.
It is time to consider how Domenico Scarlatti
condensed so much music into so few bars
with never a crabbed turn or congested cadence,
never a boast or a see-here; and stars and lakes
echo him and the copse drums out his measure,
snow peaks are lifted up in moonlight and twilight
and the sun rises on an acknowledged land.

RE: What Jobs Do Other Aspies Do?

Medusa, I also found it impossible to get a job after my Maths degree. I had no idea I was an aspie though, but I was unsure of my real career path. Well I knew I wanted to program computers but it wasn't a big career to go into at the time and I was told to do actuarial. Got a job through someone my dad knew but they treated me like an idiot there and I didn't get on. Then I couldn't get another one. Did a training course in computing and learnt C but still couldn't get a job, that in 1988. Went back towards actuarial and did the course at City University. Got 4 out of 5 possible exemptions and still couldn't get one. Ended up doing a masters degree at Imperial. By the time that was finished was 1991 and the middle of John Major's recession so no job yet again until the summer of 92 where I got one again through a contact but this one turned out better.

Still took ages to get a proper career going. Worked at a university for a bit. Finally started on a proper career path in the summer of 1996. After a couple of jobs, the first lost for no apparent reason (must have been an aspie reason) and the second one I started hating after 6 months and then went into contracting in January 1998. That was the first time I really felt happy in my career. And strangely, had no problems getting jobs now. Seems that if I was only there as a contractor they didn't care so much about my personal skills and team-fit and were just content I could do the work.

Had problems in the dot-com crash in 2002 which really set back my career, losing a job (again for aspie reasons - they didn't like working with me...) Had problem getting another one but eventually did and lost that too. Wasn't until 2005 when I got back to contracting that I found work I was happy with again. Every job since 2007 though I've hated. Too many maintenance jobs. I want green-field and nothing else really interests me. Money doesn't interest me at all.

RE: What Jobs Do Other Aspies Do?

I have sent applications to two jobs just now, one in the USA and one in Canada. Both have an office in London here so I am hoping they might consider allowing me to work remotely.

English employers seem to be such idiots. Funny that neither of those companies mentioned strong communication skills or being a team fit in their specification. They just want good programmers.

You're so lucky to have the contacts.

RE: What Jobs Do Other Aspies Do?

I spent six years working in retail pharmacy, then finally took an offer to move to a purely data-oriented job at a mail order facility.  After two-and-a-half years there, I've finally gotten used to my bosses and coworkers and actually enjoy my job and am able to fly through work without all of the people around me making me feel like I'm suffocating.

The irony is that they were sad to see me go from my retail job; they thought I had great customer service skills or something.

I told my (retail) boss on multiple occasions that I didn't understand why they thought I was good with people; I told her I was just "faking it" all the time.  I guess I figured out the rules of customer service quickly enough, and unlike some of the other workers, I could be on the verge of a total breakdown (which I was quite frequently toward the end), and I'd just keep acting my part.

RE: What Jobs Do Other Aspies Do?

Recently in the news there were some companies looking for those with AS/autism for job positions.

In reading this thread, however, it seems obvious that only very few are affected. Tokenism, ah, tekenism!

RE: What Jobs Do Other Aspies Do?

I've only had one job before (washing dishes), and that was over five years ago. I never finished college. I've applied for several jobs since then, but have almost never received any replies. I was lucky enough to get two interviews, but that was all. Obviously, I have very little experience, and no skills that I can think of. It does get really frustrating after awhile. Sometimes I wonder if I will ever be able to find a job. I don't care what the job pays, so long as it's something I'm able to do, and as long as it's at least tolerable.

RE: What Jobs Do Other Aspies Do?

I found a job two/three months ago, the first I've had since my 3-day career at an A&W Restaurant.
The job's a call/survey center. Can't say much more since I had to sign a confidentiality agreement. Suffice it to say, its good, but I'm already noticing the strain.
I'm working as fast as I can on a novel and getting ready to by the 2011 Guide to Literary Agents so I can try and get one to help me get published.
The job I've got, I get paid weekly, and sometimes I don't even get 12 hours in a week, so generally my pay ranges from 20-80 dollars per week, plus the SSI I've gotten since 2006.
Sometimes I wish I did have a college degree, but unfortunately I don't even have a GED.
(Mathematics and I are like oil and water.)
